Campgrounds and RV parks near Audubon, IA

Audubon sits in west-central Iowa, roughly an hour and a half from Des Moines and about the same from Omaha. The surrounding countryside is rolling farmland cut by the Middle Raccoon and Nishnabotna river drainages, with campgrounds concentrated at reservoir state parks and at Whiterock Conservancy near Coon Rapids. Whiterock Conservancy is a 5,500-acre nonprofit land trust that balances sustainable agriculture, conservation, and public recreation. Its River Campground sits along the Middle Raccoon River near sandstone outcroppings, while Oak Ridge RV Campground offers electric hookup sites on a wooded ridge with access to about 40 miles of trails. To the southwest, East Campground at Prairie Rose State Park and Lake Anita State Park are the two closest Iowa DNR reservoirs, both built around artificial lakes with modern shower buildings and RV-friendly loops. Schildberg Recreation Area Campground, a city-run park just outside Atlantic, rounds out the local options with full hookups and paved trails around a chain of former quarry lakes.

Prairie Rose State Park and Lake Anita State Park are 100 percent reservable through the Iowa State Parks system at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com. Reservations at Prairie Rose can be made up to 12 months in advance and must be booked at least 4 days ahead of arrival, while Lake Anita requires a 7-day advance window with the same 12-month maximum. Same-day online bookings are not offered at either park, so last-minute travelers should plan around that lead time. Whiterock Conservancy handles its own bookings through the conservancy website, and Oak Ridge RV Campground sites are reserved online. The River Campground uses a self check-in kiosk on arrival and its sites are first-come, first-served. Schildberg Recreation Area Campground is managed by the City of Atlantic and takes reservations through its own booking page linked from the city parks department.
