Campgrounds near Bloomfield
Bloomfield sits in Davis County in southeast Iowa, roughly thirteen miles southeast of Lake Wapello State Park, the county's headline outdoor destination. The surrounding region is rolling oak-hickory woodland with small reservoir lakes and the Des Moines River corridor to the east. RV travelers use Bloomfield as a base for state park camping, lake recreation, and back-road touring through Davis and Van Buren counties.
The closest developed camping is at Lake Wapello State Park near Drakesville, which offers full hook-up, electric, and non-electric sites with modern shower and restroom facilities and a trailer dump station. Additional options include Camp Wapello, Valley Village MH and RV Spaces, and Eddyville Inn and RV Park to the north, plus Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, dedicated in 1920 as Iowa's second state park, spanning 1,653 acres of oak-hickory bluffs and valleys along a large bend in the Des Moines River about an hour east.
Most sites in the area are geared to trailers and motorhomes, with a mix of full hookup, electric-only, and non-electric options.
Things to do near Bloomfield
Lake Wapello anchors most trips. The 289-acre lake supports swimming at a sand beach, fishing, and paddling, with a large beach house near the lake and boats operated at speeds up to 5 mph. Anglers target bluegill, redear sunfish, and channel catfish, with largemouth bass catch-and-release only. A seven-mile Lake Shore Trail circles the lake for hikers and trail runners.
At Lacey-Keosauqua, visitors can hike thirteen miles of trails winding through valleys and cliffs along the Des Moines River, tour structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and swim at the 30-acre lake. Bloomfield itself has a historic town square, and the nearby villages of Bentonsport and Bonaparte on the Des Moines River add craft and antique stops within a short drive.

Peak camping season in southern Iowa runs May through mid-October. Iowa DNR staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them down around mid-October depending on weather. If camping in April or later in October, there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available.
Spring brings unsettled weather and the highest rainfall of the year, which can leave lower campsites soft and trails muddy. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book out fastest at Lake Wapello and Lacey-Keosauqua. September and early October are typically the driest and most comfortable window, with cooler nights and lighter crowds. Van Buren County's Scenic Drive Festival on the second weekend of October brings a burst of visitors to the Des Moines River villages.
From November 1 through March 31, most Iowa state park campsites are walk-in only, with advance reservations not available due to unpredictable winter weather.
How to book
Iowa state park campsites, including Lake Wapello and Lacey-Keosauqua, are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations can be made up to 3 months in advance of the arrival date, and one hundred percent of Iowa state park campsites are reservable within that window. A two-night minimum applies on weekends from May 1 through October 31, with a three-night minimum on holiday weekends.
Cabins at both parks book on a longer 12-month window and go quickly for summer weekends. Private options such as Valley Village MH and RV Spaces and Eddyville Inn and RV Park are booked directly with the operator and generally have more flexible arrival windows.
What to expect
Expect quiet, wooded state park campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Lake Wapello's loops sit adjacent to the lake with modern restrooms and a dump station, and cell coverage in the immediate area can be spotty. A sand beach is available for swimming, but there is no lifeguard on duty, and Lake Wapello enforces a no-wake, 5 mph limit for boats. Only electric motors are allowed on Lacey Lake at Lacey-Keosauqua.
Access roads to some state park loops involve narrow county blacktops with tight turns. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa, so buy firewood locally rather than transporting it. Bring insect repellent for summer stays, and pack for temperature swings on shoulder-season trips.
