Campgrounds and RV parks near Chariton, IA

Water recreation drives most trips. Elk Rock State Park sits on Lake Red Rock and offers ample opportunity for boating and fishing, and hikers can move through woodland habitats and remnants of prairie along the park's 13-mile multi-use trail system. Rathbun Lake, adjacent to Honey Creek State Park, adds a marina, beach access, and quiet coves for paddling. Equestrians have unusual depth here. The Whitebreast Unit has two stocked ponds, three equestrian campgrounds, and 20 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and riding. At Elk Rock, the equestrian campground has a modern shower building, horse stalls, hitching rails, and a 100 foot by 200 foot riding arena. Off the water, families can fish stocked ponds inside Stephens Forest, catch races at Knoxville Raceway, or drive to Pella for its Dutch-heritage shops.

The peak RV season in south-central Iowa runs from late spring through early fall, and reservations at state parks are tightest around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Honey Creek State Park, Elk Rock State Park, and the Whitebreast Equestrian loops in Stephens State Forest all follow the same Iowa DNR pattern: the campgrounds are closed November 1 through March 31 and accept reservations April 1 through October 31. Summer brings warm, humid days and thunderstorms, and June is typically the wettest month of the year. Storms can close low-lying sites and equestrian trails, so build a buffer day into any horse-camping plan. Equestrian trails may be closed for a period of time when rainfall or other natural events have created conditions that would cause them to degrade, and staff cannot guarantee trail status when a reservation is made. Fall delivers cooler nights, hardwood color, and lighter crowds before the state park loops close. Winter camping is limited: most state park sites are closed, though private parks like Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park and River Oaks RV Park stay open year-round for cold-weather trips.

Site type varies sharply by property. State forest campgrounds are rustic: the Whitebreast and Lucas Unit campgrounds in Stephens State Forest do not have electricity and rely on pit toilets rather than modern restrooms or showers. Bring water storage and a self-contained rig. Honey Creek and Elk Rock, by contrast, offer modern shower buildings, electric sites, full-hookup options at Honey Creek, and dump stations. Big rigs are generally welcome at the closest campgrounds. Whitebreast Equestrian accepts vehicles up to 65 feet, and River Oaks RV Park runs 90-plus spacious full-hookup RV sites along the Des Moines River, open year-round, plus primitive campsites and A-frame cabins. Cell coverage is patchy in the forest units, roads into private parks can include gravel stretches, and firewood should be sourced locally to comply with the statewide emerald ash borer quarantine.
