RV camping near Clarion, Iowa
Clarion sits in Wright County in north-central Iowa, within roughly an hour of several state parks that anchor the region's RV camping. The largest is Brushy Creek State Recreation Area, one of Iowa's premier outdoor recreation destinations at 6,500 acres, with a 690-acre lake that is the deepest artificial permanent pool lake in Iowa and an extensive network of trails. It includes two equestrian campgrounds plus a beach loop on the reservoir.
North of Clarion, McIntosh Woods State Park is a 60-acre natural enclave on the northwest shore of Clear Lake in northern Iowa, and functions as a lakefront base for anglers and boaters. To the northeast, Beeds Lake State Park lies near Hampton and is located in Franklin County, Iowa, centered around a 99-acre reservoir created by a dam on Beeds Creek, with a historic CCC-era stone dam.
All three parks are run by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and share the same online reservation system, so trip planning across multiple stops is straightforward. Sites range from electric-only pads suitable for smaller rigs to full-hookup options at Brushy Creek.
Things to do near Clarion
Water recreation drives most trips. Fishing is a popular activity at Brushy Creek, where the lake has 21 miles of shoreline with four boat ramps and eight fishing jetties, and anglers can try their luck fishing for bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, walleye or muskellunge. The 3,643-acre Clear Lake is a Midwest destination for year-round fishing, including walleye, muskie, Northern pike, catfish, yellow bass and panfish.
Trail users have options too. Brushy Creek has more than 45 miles of multi-use trails, including a 12-mile gravel trail around Brushy Creek Lake, explored by horseback riding, mountain biking or on foot, with snowmobiling and cross country skiing in the winter. At Beeds Lake, a scenic two-mile shoreline trail and a modern boat ramp, fishing jetties and docks, and a swimming beach anchor the day-use area.

Iowa state park campgrounds run on a strong seasonal cycle. The Beeds Lake campground is closed January 1 through March 31 and again November 1 through December 31, with off-peak dates in April and mid-to-late October and peak season from May 1 through October 15. Peak booking pressure hits Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lakefront and electric sites go quickly.
Shoulder-season RVers should plan for reduced services. All park water facilities are typically operational by May 1, and shower buildings and dump stations start closing down around mid-October depending on weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available for off-season camping, but campers should call the park to confirm, and if camping in April or later in October there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available.
Equestrian campers at Brushy Creek should note that equestrian trails may close after rainfall or other weather events to protect natural areas from degradation, will re-open when conditions improve, and the DNR cannot guarantee equestrian trails will be open on the scheduled arrival date.
How to book
All three state parks near Clarion use the Iowa DNR reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Advance campsite reservations can be made online through the online reservation system, the campgrounds are 100% reservable and a reservation is required. Booking windows vary slightly by park: at Brushy Creek, reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 3 months in advance, while at Beeds Lake campsites can be reserved 3 months in advance up to 4 days prior to arrival.
For popular summer weekends, log in when the three-month window opens to secure lakefront or full-hookup sites. Important note for trip planning: the North, Middle (Beach), and South campgrounds at Brushy Creek were not accepting reservations due to ongoing renovations, with all campgrounds closed and no camping allowed until the renovation is complete. Verify status on the reservation site before finalizing plans.
What to expect
Facilities are consistent across the Iowa DNR system. McIntosh Woods offers a campground with electric and non-electric sites, a modern restroom and a shower building, plus two yurts, and it is the only state park with yurts. Beeds Lake provides electrical hookups, two modern restrooms, showers and a sanitary dump station.
Sites can feel close together in peak season, particularly the parallel-parking RV sites at Beeds Lake. Come prepared for a leashed-pet environment: campers are not allowed to leave pets unattended, pets are not allowed to run at large, and all animals shall be kept on a leash not to exceed 6 feet in length. Firewood should be bought locally near the park and burned during the stay, since using local firewood is one of the best ways to slow the spread of forest pests.
