Camping near Coralville, Iowa
Coralville sits in eastern Iowa's Johnson County, immediately northwest of Iowa City and adjacent to Coralville Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Iowa River. The area gives RV renters quick access to a mix of state parks, Corps-managed shorelines, and private RV parks within a short drive of Interstate 80.
Most nearby camping clusters around two waterways. Coralville Lake and Lake Macbride sit just north of town, while the Cedar River corridor to the northeast holds additional wooded parks. Lake Macbride State Park spans 2,180 acres around an 812-acre reservoir in Johnson County, divided into northern and southern units connected by the lake itself. Palisades-Kepler State Park encompasses 840 acres along the Cedar River, roughly 10 miles east of Cedar Rapids, with dramatic limestone bluffs, deep ravines, and majestic hardwood forests.
Closer-in options include Scales Pointe Camping and Boating on Coralville Lake, the primitive campground at Lake Macbride State Park, Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca, and BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow, giving renters choices from hookup sites to shaded primitive loops.
Things to do around Coralville
Water access drives most trips. A state-maintained boat ramp and dock on the adjacent Coralville Lake provides access to the Iowa River, and pontoons, motorboats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboats are available for rent near the beach at Lake Macbride. A 10 horsepower motor limit is in effect on Lake Macbride from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day.
On land, more than seven miles of hiking trails wind through diverse habitats around Lake Macbride. Palisades-Kepler adds five miles of rugged trails through diverse wildlife and forest habitats, with spring wildflowers and fishing on the Cedar River for channel catfish, bass and walleye. Downtown Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus are a short drive south for museums, restaurants, and a rainy-day backup plan.

The Iowa camping season is tightly bracketed by state park rules. The Lake Macbride campground accepts reservations from April 1 to November 15 and is closed November 16 to March 31. Palisades-Kepler follows the same pattern, accepting reservations April 1 to November 15 and closing November 16 to March 31. RV travelers targeting hookups should plan trips inside that window.
Late spring and early fall offer the most comfortable temperatures and lighter crowds. Summer is peak season for lake use and family trips, with warm, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Spring and fall bring mild weather and peak natural scenery, summer offers warm days that can be quite busy, and winters are cold and quiet.
Winter closures matter for planning. State park campgrounds shut down for the cold months, so RV renters visiting between mid-November and late March should look at private parks or year-round Corps sites and expect limited services. Buying firewood locally rather than transporting it remains the standard practice across Iowa due to ongoing emerald ash borer concerns.
How to book a site near Coralville
Iowa state parks use a single online reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Lake Macbride operates seasonally from April 1 through November 15, with 100% of campsites reservable through the Iowa State Parks reservation system, and reservations can be made up to three months in advance. Check-in is at 4 PM and check-out at 3 PM, with a maximum stay of 14 consecutive nights.
Palisades-Kepler campsite and cabin reservations are made through the same online system, and the campground is 100% reservable with a reservation required. Coralville Lake Corps campgrounds use Recreation.gov on a separate booking window. Private options such as BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow and Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca book direct through their own websites. Summer weekends, holidays, and University of Iowa football weekends fill first, so book as early as the window opens.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of modern hookup loops and rustic tent areas. Lake Macbride's northern unit houses the modern campground with 32 standard electric sites at 20, 30, and 50 amp plus 11 full-hookup sites with water and sewer, accommodating RVs up to 60 feet, while the southern unit features 52 primitive tent-only sites in a heavily wooded area, and both campgrounds offer modern restrooms with flush toilets and showers.
The Palisades-Kepler campground contains electrical hookups, modern shower and restroom facilities, and a trailer dump station. Some sites there can be small and hilly, so leveling blocks are useful.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across Johnson and Linn counties. Bug pressure peaks in June and July, so pack repellent. Quiet hours and posted check-in times are enforced across Iowa DNR parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Coralville, IA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Coralville, IA?
RV rental in Coralville, IA is one of the more affordable ways to explore eastern Iowa. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run about $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night. Booking on weekdays or outside Hawkeye football weekends will save you the most, since Iowa City lodging spikes when the University of Iowa hosts games at Kinnick Stadium. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book and a cheap RV rental Coralville option, then message the host about multi-night discounts. Many hosts knock 10 to 15 percent off weekly stays during shoulder season.
coralville.gov/267/VisitorsWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Coralville?
Good news: a regular Iowa driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Coralville. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required by the Iowa Department of Transportation for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers. You will need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform when you book, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is and can be cleared to drive within minutes of booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Coralville RV rental?
Every RV rental in Coralville booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Interstate 80 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), letting you match coverage to your comfort level for trips around Coralville Lake, the Amana Colonies, or the Johnson County backroads. Each plan outlines what is covered for damage, liability, and roadside events, so review the tiers before you book. Pro tip: with roadside assistance included, a flat tire or dead battery on Highway 6 is just a quick phone call away, day or night.

You can book your Coralville RV trip with confidence because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, with additional flexibility depending on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. That platform-wide policy is reassuring in the Midwest, where spring thunderstorms can shift plans. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you will not see it listed on individual RVs. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates, and contact RVezy support if your plans change so they can walk you through your options.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Coralville options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) for a small cleaning fee. Coralville is a great dog town: the Coralville Dog Park on Oakdale Boulevard has separate areas for big and small dogs, and the Clear Creek Trail is leash-friendly and runs right through town. At Coralville Lake, pets are welcome at all Corps of Engineers campgrounds as long as they're leashed and not left unattended. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details and ask about any breed or size preferences.
coralville.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Coralville-Dog-Park-23Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Coralville?
Yes, RV delivery in Coralville is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, and many local hosts offer it. They will drive the RV to West Overlook Campground, Sugar Bottom, your driveway, or a Kinnick Stadium tailgate lot, then set up the slide-outs, hookups, and awning before walking you through every system. It is perfect if it is your first time renting an RV or you would rather skip towing through Iowa City traffic. Delivery fees are set by the host and often scale with distance, with some offering free delivery within a set radius. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery and look for hosts based in Coralville, North Liberty, or Iowa City to keep delivery distance and cost low.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106594-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Coralville RV trip?

Popular Coralville RV trip routes include the Amana Colonies (about 20 miles west), Cedar Rapids (about 30 miles north), Maquoketa Caves State Park (about 75 miles northeast), the Mississippi River town of Dubuque (about 90 miles), and Effigy Mounds National Monument (about 140 miles). Hosts set their own mileage policies, with daily allowances typically between 100 and 200 miles, and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. For longer loops, message the host to pre-purchase extra miles at a discounted rate. Pro tip: filter for Unlimited Mileage if you are chasing a multi-state itinerary.
nps.gov/efmo/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Coralville?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Coralville. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates several outstanding campgrounds right on Coralville Lake: West Overlook (89 electric sites in a wooded setting near the dam), Sugar Bottom (large full-service sites with lake access on the east shore), and Sandy Beach (popular for families with a swim beach next door). Dam Complex Campground sits just below the spillway near the famous Devonian Fossil Gorge. For full hookups closer to town, Colony Country Campground in nearby Amana is a longtime favorite. Pro tip: most Corps sites open May 1 and close October 31, so reserve early on Recreation.gov for summer weekends.
mvr.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Coralville-Lake/When is the best time to rent an RV in Coralville?
Late spring through early fall is prime time for an RV rental in Coralville, IA, with the sweet spot running mid-May through early October. Summer highs sit in the mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 29 to 30 Celsius) with warm, humid nights perfect for lakeside campfires. September and early October bring crisp mornings in the 50s, fewer mosquitoes, and beautiful fall color along the Iowa River, plus it lines up with Hawkeye football season. Winters get genuinely cold (lows in the teens and single digits) and most Corps of Engineers campgrounds close October 31. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip in late May or mid-September for the best weather-to-crowd ratio and lower nightly rates.
weather.gov/dvn/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Coralville beginner-friendly?
Coralville is one of the easier places in the country to learn the RV ropes. The terrain is gentle, Interstate 80 and Highway 6 are wide and well-maintained, and you're never far from a flat parking lot to practice turning. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, holding tanks, leveling, and hookups, so you won't be guessing on day one. If city driving makes you nervous, request delivery straight to your campground at Coralville Lake. Pro tip: start small with a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Coralville for your first trip. They drive almost like a large van and are perfect for a confidence-building weekend at Sugar Bottom.
iowadot.gov/mvd/driverslicense/driver-license-and-id-overviewWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered 24/7. Every RVezy booking includes round-the-clock roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Interstate 80, a dead battery at West Overlook, or a tow out of a muddy campsite is just one phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch help anywhere in Iowa, including the rural stretches between Coralville and the Amana Colonies. For anything specific to the RV itself (like the water pump or awning), your host is your go-to contact and most respond within minutes. Pro tip: save both the RVezy roadside number and your host's phone number to your phone before you leave the driveway, so you are set even if you lose signal near Lake Macbride.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Coralville rental on an RV road trip across state lines?
Yes, an RV road trip from Coralville across state lines is welcome on RVezy as long as you stay within the U.S. and Canada. Iowa's central location makes it an awesome launchpad: Chicago is about 220 miles east, the Wisconsin Dells about 230 miles northeast, the Badlands of South Dakota around 580 miles west, and the Ozarks roughly 400 miles south. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host, so message them through the listing to confirm before booking. Pro tip: ask hosts about extra mileage packages if your route exceeds the included daily allowance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost in Iowa?
Budgeting fuel for your motorhome rental in Coralville is pretty straightforward. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for campervans, and 10 to 14 MPG for trucks towing travel trailers. Iowa gas prices typically track close to the national average for regular unleaded, with diesel a bit higher. Plenty of large truck stops along Interstate 80, including the Coralville and Tiffin exits, make refueling an RV easy. Pro tip: download a fuel-price app and fuel up on the Iowa side before crossing into Illinois, where prices often jump noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Coralville?
For summer weekends at Coralville Lake, book your campsite as soon as the reservation window opens. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uses Recreation.gov, and sites at West Overlook, Sugar Bottom, and Sandy Beach become reservable up to six months in advance. They fill fast for Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and any weekend the Iowa Hawkeyes have a home football game. Weeknights and shoulder season (May, September, October) are much easier and often available a few days out. Pro tip: set a Recreation.gov alert for your dates because cancellations pop up daily, and you can snag a prime lakeside electric site even on short notice.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/158What are the driving conditions like around Coralville?
Driving conditions around Coralville are very RV-friendly. Interstate 80 runs right through town with wide lanes and plenty of truck-stop pull-offs, and Highway 6 and First Avenue handle larger rigs with no issue. The main things to watch are summer thunderstorms (which can bring brief but intense downpours and hail), occasional spring tornado warnings, and winter ice from November through March. Avoid narrow downtown Iowa City streets and the low clearance under the Burlington Street bridge by sticking to the Coralville Strip and I-80. Pro tip: check the Iowa 511 app before you roll. It shows live road closures, construction, and weather alerts statewide.
