Campgrounds and RV parks near Cresco, IA

Paddling is the headline activity. The Upper Iowa River threads past limestone bluffs and is accessible from outfitters like Chimney Rock Canoe Rental and Campground, with day trips and multi-day floats both practical for families. North of the state line, Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park features blue ribbon trout streams, roughly 17 miles of hiking trails, and 15 miles of horseback trails, and Mystery Cave offers guided tours daily in the summer months through Minnesota's longest known cave. The closest paved bike trail sits about 12 miles from the park at Preston or Fountain, connecting to the Root River State Trail system. Closer to Cresco, Harvest Farm Campground Resort and Hutchinson Family Farm Campground lean into family programming, and small-town stops in Decorah, Spillville, and Lansing add museums, breweries, and scenic drives to a trip.

The camping season concentrates from late spring through mid-fall. Most private parks in the area operate roughly May through October, and river outfitters run paddling trips once water levels settle after spring runoff. Trout streams draw anglers from the regular season opener in mid-April through mid-September, with a catch-and-release season running mid-September through mid-April at Forestville. Summer brings the busiest weekends. Holiday windows around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill fastest at both private resorts near Cresco and at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Camping at Forestville is available April through November, which mirrors the practical RV season across the region. Early fall is a strong shoulder window. Cooler nights, thinning bug pressure, and hardwood color along the Upper Iowa and Root River valleys make September and early October popular for weekend trips. Winter camping is limited in the region: private grounds close, and rustic non-electric sites remain available at Forestville in spring and fall when the shower building is closed.

Terrain in this corner of the Driftless Area is rolling to steep, with narrow river valleys, gravel county roads, and occasional low bridges. Larger Class A and fifth-wheel drivers should map routes in advance, especially into river-bottom campgrounds. The Horse Camp at Forestville accepts big rigs with a 50-foot max RV length and offers 23 electric sites among its 55 total sites. Amenities vary widely. Private resorts near Cresco typically offer full hookups, laundry, and family activities, while state park and river sites lean rustic with limited or no hookups. At Forestville, regular electric campsites have 30 amp service and horse electric campsites have 50 amp service, with drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station available at the main campground. Expect mosquitoes near water in summer and cell coverage that drops in the deeper valleys.
