Campgrounds and RV parks near Fremont, IA

Water recreation anchors most trips. Lake Wapello State Park has a 289-acre lake with one of southern Iowa's best sand beaches, a seven-mile Lake Shore Trail, and fishing for bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish, with largemouth bass catch-and-release only. Motorboats are held to a 5 mph limit, which keeps the lake calm for paddling and swimming with kids. Closer to Fremont, the Des Moines River corridor offers boat ramps, bank fishing, and quiet county parks. Keokuk County Izaak Walton League hosts shooting sports and family events on its grounds near Sigourney. Oskaloosa, a short drive north, supplies groceries, fuel, laundry, and a walkable town square. Nelson Pioneer Farm and small local museums provide rainy-day options between camp days.

The camping season in this part of Iowa runs roughly from mid-April through late October. Lake Wapello State Park's campground follows the Iowa DNR calendar: closed January through March, off-peak in April, peak from May through mid-October, then off-peak until it closes on November 1 for the winter. Most county-managed campgrounds in the area open in mid to late April and close in late October, weather permitting. Spring is wet. May is the rainiest month in the Oskaloosa area, and low-lying county sites near the Des Moines River can be muddy or briefly inaccessible after heavy storms. Summer brings hot, humid weather and the busiest weekends, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Fall is prime RV weather: cooler nights, lower humidity, and thinner crowds through September and October. Winter camping is limited to a few private parks that stay open year-round, such as Eddyville Inn and RV Park and Indian Hills RV Park; water systems at seasonal parks are winterized from November through March.

This is rural southeast Iowa: two-lane highways, gravel county roads, small towns, and cell coverage that is generally solid but can dip in the river valleys. Big rigs will find level pads and 50-amp service at the private parks, while state and county sites tend toward electric-and-water hookups with a shared dump station. Lake Wapello's lakeside campground offers full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites with modern shower and restroom facilities and a trailer dump station on site. County campgrounds are simpler, often with vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic shelters rather than centralized bathhouses. Quiet hours are typically enforced overnight, and check-out times vary by park. Firewood should be bought locally, since emerald ash borer has been confirmed in every Iowa county and moving wood across county lines is discouraged even where quarantines have been lifted.
