Campgrounds and RV parks near Granger, IA

Outdoor activity centers on the river valleys and reservoir shorelines around Des Moines. At Ledges State Park, Canyon Road runs outside the campground with multiple trails for hiking up and along the scenic ledges, and creek crossings on Peas Creek are a common draw for families with kids. At Walnut Woods, campers can fish, hike more than two miles of trails through wooded bottomland, launch a canoe or boat from the ramp on the west end of the park, and watch for warblers, flycatchers, hawks, owls, and songbirds. Closer to Granger, Jester Park and Saylorville Lake add beaches, boat ramps, and equestrian trails. In the metro, families often pair a camping trip with the Blank Park Zoo or, in August, the Iowa State Fair.

Central Iowa camping runs on a clear seasonal rhythm. Ledges State Park is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations March through November, and the campground is closed December through February. Frost-free hydrants may be available for off-season camping, but campers should call the park to confirm hydrant availability, and there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available in April or later in October. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them down around mid-October depending on the weather. Walnut Woods runs on a different calendar. The campground is 100 percent reservable, reservations are required, and it accepts reservations year round until 10:00 pm the day of arrival. Modern flush restrooms and a dump station are available, though there are no showers. Summer weekends fill fastest. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when only a few unreserved sites typically remain available. At Cutty's, family programming runs heavily through the warmer months, with organized activities and events for members and their guests.

Sites near Granger range from full-service private resorts to wooded state park loops. At Walnut Woods, shady campsites have concrete pads and either electrical service or full hook-ups with electric, water, and sewer, and all sites are available by reservation only. The park offers eight full hookups and 13 standard electric-only campsites, and there are no showers on site. Ledges offers full hook-up, electric, and non-electric campsites, along with several hike-in sites and one youth group campsite; modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and a playground are located in the campground. Access on the lower canyon roads can be tight for bigger rigs and has historically been subject to flooding, so check park alerts before arrival. Expect firewood restrictions statewide. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 counties in Iowa, so buy local bundles at the campground or nearby stores rather than moving firewood in.
