Camping near Guthrie Center, Iowa
Guthrie Center sits in Guthrie County in west-central Iowa, along the South Raccoon River and roughly an hour west of Des Moines. The area is defined by rolling hills, mature timber, small reservoirs, and river valleys, giving RV travelers a compact mix of state park lakes, private RV parks, and a large working conservancy within a short drive.
The closest public campground is Springbrook State Park, a 930-acre park of rolling hills and mature timber in Guthrie County, about nine miles north of Guthrie Center. West and north near Coon Rapids, Whiterock Conservancy offers over 40 miles of trails and multiple campgrounds, including Oak Ridge RV Campground and River CG. To the southwest near Interstate 80, Lake Anita State Park anchors trips built around a 171-acre lake.
Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC rounds out the choices with a private-park option in the same corridor. Together, these campgrounds cover full-hookup RV stays, electric and non-electric sites, primitive tent nights, and equestrian trips.
Things to do near Guthrie Center
Water and trails drive most trips. Springbrook State Park has about 12 miles of trails through timber and prairie, a 17-acre spring-fed lake, and access to the Middle Raccoon River, with fishing for species common to Iowa lakes and rivers. Snowmobiling is allowed on four miles of designated trails in winter.
At Whiterock Conservancy, Oak Ridge RV Campground gives immediate access to over 40 miles of trails, with about 20 miles designated for equestrian use, plus ridge-top views under an oak grove. River CG sits along the Middle Raccoon River for paddling and shoreline fishing.
At Lake Anita State Park, a paved multi-use trail runs completely around the 171-acre lake through restored prairie, and the beach, sand volleyball, two boat ramps, and fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish fill out summer days.

The camping season in this part of Iowa is tightly tied to state park schedules. Springbrook's campground is closed from November 1 through March 31, with an off-peak window in April, a peak window from May 1 to October 15, and another off-peak stretch through October 31. Lake Anita follows the same annual pattern. Cabins at Springbrook, including the Sherburne House, are reservable year-round.
Late spring through early fall is the busy stretch. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially at Lake Anita, where movies are shown every Saturday night in the campground from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Camp stores and concessions generally follow the same Memorial Day to Labor Day window.
Shoulder-season trips in April and October, plus cabin stays in winter, can offer cooler weather, fewer crowds, and easier last-minute booking. Water hydrants, shower buildings, and dump stations are typically shut down from mid-October to mid-April, so RV travelers should check park alerts before heading out.
How to book campgrounds near Guthrie Center
Iowa's state parks use a central reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Advance reservations for Springbrook State Park are made through the online reservation system, and the campground is 100 percent reservable. Reservations are accepted from April 1 through October 31, up until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival, and can be booked for today and up to 3 months in advance.
Lake Anita State Park uses the same platform, with a longer window: reservations must be made at least 7 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. Popular lakefront and full-hookup loops go early for holiday weekends.
Whiterock Conservancy campgrounds, including Oak Ridge RV Campground and River CG, are booked directly through Whiterock's guest services rather than the state system. Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC is a private park and is reserved directly with the campground.
What to expect at Guthrie Center campgrounds
Expect a mix of modern and rustic. Springbrook's campground offers non-electric and electric campsites, modern restrooms and showers, and a sanitary dump station, plus sand volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and a playground within the campground. The camp store is open weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day and stocks camping supplies, food, firewood, and ice.
Lake Anita is larger and more open, with electric, non-electric, and full-hookup sites near the lake and modern shower and restroom buildings. Sites are tiered around the water and some are close together.
Oak Ridge RV Campground is smaller and simpler, with electric hookup campsites, horse pens, gravel parking pads, fire rings, picnic tables, three water hydrants, a central dump station, and a shower house with two private rooms. Cell service can be spotty at Whiterock and in wooded park interiors.
