Campgrounds and RV parks near Huxley, IA

Ledges State Park is the region's headline outdoor stop. Sandstone canyons, creek crossings along Canyon Road, and shaded hiking trails make it a strong pick for families with kids who want to wade and explore. Fall colors are a draw, with a mix of orange, red, yellow, and purple foliage. At Walnut Woods State Park, more than two miles of trails meander through wooded bottomland along the Raccoon River, and the park is known for bird watching, with dozens of species recorded. Adventureland Campground puts renters within walking distance of roller coasters and a water park, and Prairie Meadows Casino and Racetrack sits nearby in Altoona. Cyclists can pick up paved rail-trails around Ames and Des Moines, and the Great Western Trail links the south metro to Martensdale along a paved path of roughly 16.5 miles.

Central Iowa runs on a strong seasonal calendar. State park campgrounds shift into peak-rate operation from May 1 through October 15, when weekend reservations are essential. Ledges State Park is 100 percent reservable, with its campground closed December 1 through the end of February and open with off-peak rates in March, April, late October, and November. Private resorts follow a similar rhythm. Adventureland Campground operates on a seasonal calendar tied to the amusement park. Walnut Woods is the notable year-round exception among nearby state parks and accepts reservations year-round, with a same-day booking cut-off of 9 pm for those paying by credit or debit card. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms; fall is the sweet spot for cooler nights and color. Park staff generally aim to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them around mid-October depending on weather, so modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or later in October.

Expect a mix of shaded, wooded state park loops and open private resorts with paved or concrete pads. State park sites lean toward electric-only hookups with a central dump station, while private parks offer full water, electric, and sewer at the site. Ledges has 69 RV campsites, with sixteen offering full water, electric, and sewer hookups and fifty-three offering electric hookups only. Walnut Woods has modern restrooms and a sanitary dump station but no showers, so plan accordingly. All Walnut Woods sites have electric service and eight are full hookup. Cell coverage across the Des Moines metro is generally strong. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests. Pets are welcome at all listed parks on a leash.
