Campgrounds and RV parks near Jewell Junction, IA

Jewell Junction sits in Hamilton County in central Iowa, within driving distance of several state park campgrounds along the Des Moines River corridor. RV travelers based here have access to lake, river, and canyon landscapes without long transit days, which suits families running a short weekend or a week-long loop. The closest large destination is Brushy Creek State Recreation Area, one of the largest state parks in Iowa at 6,500 acres, with a mosaic of native prairie, grassland, timber, river and lake habitats. It offers three distinct campgrounds: Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - South Equestrian, Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Beach, and Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - North Equestrian. The non-equestrian campground contains electric and full hookup sites with water and sewer, and two equestrian campgrounds serve horse campers. Farther south, Ledges State Park near Boone and Dolliver Memorial State Park along the Des Moines River round out the options, both operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

All three parks use the same statewide platform. Iowa State Parks reservations are handled through ReserveAmerica on the iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com portal, and campsites are 100 percent reservable with a reservation required. Booking windows are shorter than many out-of-state visitors expect. Iowa DNR sites generally accept reservations up to 3 months in advance, and reservations at Dolliver can be made up to 10:00 pm CST on the day of arrival. Peak season carries a 2-night minimum on weekends and a 3-night minimum on major holiday weekends, which is standard across the Iowa DNR system. Equestrian campers heading to Brushy Creek should note that Iowa requires horses, mules, and donkeys transported interstate to carry a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and a negative Coggins test, and this paperwork must accompany the animal into the state.
