Keosauqua camping overview
Keosauqua sits along a horseshoe bend of the Des Moines River in Van Buren County, southeast Iowa. The town is the gateway for RV travelers heading to Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, Iowa's second-oldest state park, which spans roughly 1,653 acres of oak-hickory bluffs and valleys, a 30-acre lake, and 13 miles of trails.
Campground options in the area mix state, city, county, and private properties. Lacey Keosauqua State Park offers the main developed campground with electric and non-electric sites, modern restrooms and showers, and a dump station. Indian Lake Park, a city-owned park in nearby Farmington, has full-hookup, water and electric, and electric-only sites around a 44-acre no-wake lake. Battle of Athens State Historic Site, just across the river in Missouri, adds a first-come, first-served option with basic and electric sites on the Des Moines River.
Smaller private parks such as Kahoka RV Park and Updog RV and Camping round out the choices for travelers wanting quieter overnight stops away from the state park hub.
Things to do around Keosauqua
Trails are the main draw. Lacey Keosauqua State Park has 13 miles of hiking paths through river bluffs, including a three-mile trail segment along the Des Moines River that passes Civilian Conservation Corps structures and a series of Woodland Culture burial mounds. The park's 30-acre lake allows swimming at a sand beach and boating with electric motors only.
On the water, Lake Sugema, located two miles from the park, is popular for fishing. The Des Moines River supports kayaking and river fishing along its length through the park.
History-oriented visitors can tour Civil War buildings at Battle of Athens State Historic Site, walk the Mill Trail through 19th-century town ruins, and visit the historic river villages of Bentonsport and Bonaparte.
