Campgrounds near Keystone, Iowa
Keystone sits in Benton County in east-central Iowa, roughly a half-hour drive west of Cedar Rapids and within easy reach of the Amana Colonies, the Cedar River corridor, and several county and state parks. RV renters use it as a quiet base for exploring eastern Iowa without staying inside a larger city.
Campground options in the area range from full-service private parks to state recreation land. Amana Colonies RV Park sits on 80 acres in the Iowa River Valley with over 450 sites, many full-hookup and long enough for big rigs, plus laundry, Wi-Fi, and propane, and is open seasonally from April through early November. Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area, in Linn County near Palo, is home to a 410-acre lake, 1,517 acres of public hunting ground, a swimming beach, campgrounds, and twelve miles of multi-use trails.
Smaller family-oriented parks round out the mix. BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres, Outback Campground and Resort, and Rusty Ridge Campground add further options for renters who want a quieter, tree-lined setting closer to the Cedar Rapids corridor.
Things to do near Keystone
Water-based recreation drives most trips. Boating is popular on Pleasant Creek Lake, one of the larger lake destinations in eastern Iowa, where any size motor may be operated at no-wake speed, four boat ramps and a kayak launching area provide access, and kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, and windsurfing are common. Anglers fish for muskellunge, channel catfish, largemouth bass, white bass, and more, with fishing jetties providing shoreline access.
On land, 8.5 miles of trails support hiking, running, snowmobiling, mountain and fat-tire biking, cross-country skiing, and equestrian riding, with connections to area facilities and scenic overlooks. The nearby Amana Colonies, a National Historic Landmark, offer German-heritage restaurants, wineries, breweries, shops, and walking paths that work well as a day trip from any of the area campgrounds.

Most campgrounds in this part of Iowa follow a spring-to-fall season. The campground at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area accepts reservations April through October and is closed November through March. Amana Colonies RV Park is open April 1 to November 1. Renters planning shoulder-season trips should confirm dates directly with each park, as opening and closing weekends shift with the weather.
Late spring brings unpredictable rain and possible severe thunderstorms; sites can be soft after heavy storms but generally drain within a day. Summer is peak season, with warm humid days, active mosquitoes near water, and weekends that fill quickly at both public and private parks. Fall delivers the most comfortable RV weather, cool nights, low humidity, and thinner crowds after Labor Day.
Winter camping options near Keystone are limited. State recreation sites are closed, and most private RV parks reduce services or shut off water lines once hard freezes set in, though staff at some parks remain available year-round for planning and rally bookings.
How to book campgrounds near Keystone
State-run sites use Iowa's central reservation system. Advanced campsite and cabin reservations at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area are made through the online reservation system, 100 percent of the campsites are reservable, and a reservation is required. The reservation website is iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com and the call center number is 1-877-427-2757. A cancellation fee applies to all cancellations; cancellations 15 to 29 days prior to arrival forfeit one night's rental fee and tax plus the cancellation fee, and cancellations less than 15 days prior forfeit two nights.
Private parks book directly. Amana Colonies RV Park takes reservations through its own website and by phone, and fills well ahead for Oktoberfest and rally weekends. BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres, Outback Campground and Resort, and Rusty Ridge Campground each handle bookings through their own sites or by phone; last-minute weekend availability is tightest between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
What to expect on-site
Sites near Keystone lean toward level gravel or grass pads with room for larger rigs. Amana Colonies RV Park offers over 450 sites on 80 acres, with many full-hookup 50-amp sites up to 75 feet long, free Wi-Fi, laundry, propane service, and close proximity to shops and restaurants. Shade is limited at the larger open parks, so awnings and portable canopies help in summer.
Pleasant Creek offers camping in three non-equestrian campgrounds, with electric and non-electric sites and two modern shower and restroom facilities. Individual sewer hookups are not provided at every state site, so a dump-station stop before departure is typical. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the corridor between Cedar Rapids and the Amanas. Firewood is usually sold on-site; bringing wood in from out of state is discouraged.
