Camping near Le Mars, Iowa
Le Mars sits in northwest Iowa, roughly 25 miles north of Sioux City, and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Loess Hills, the Big Sioux River corridor, and the Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska tri-state area. Most developed campgrounds are clustered south and west of town along the I-29 corridor, with a mix of state parks, a private KOA, and small local RV parks.
Stone State Park is a scenic natural area located in the Loess Hills of western Iowa, near Sioux City, spanning approximately 1,069 acres, and is the closest state-managed campground with electric and non-electric sites suitable for RVs and tents. The Sioux City North KOA Holiday, just across the South Dakota line off I-29, is the closest full-service private option with pull-through hookups, cabins, and family amenities. Smaller nearby options include The lazy H campground and Park Jeff Campground.
For a longer drive with a bigger campground footprint, Main - Newton Hills State Park in South Dakota offers a large loop of electric sites, cabins, and lake access, roughly an hour north of Le Mars near Canton.
Things to do around Le Mars
Le Mars markets itself as the Ice Cream Capital of the World and centers around the Wells Visitor Center in town, an easy stop for families before heading to the campground. The surrounding countryside is farmland, with the more dramatic terrain to the south in the Loess Hills.
Stone State Park offers diverse landscapes including prairie grasslands, oak savanna habitats and forested areas, with rugged terrain ideal for hiking and mountain biking across its multi-use trails. Anglers can fish the Big Sioux River for catfish and smallmouth bass, and the Little Sioux River for walleye and northern pike. Nearby, the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center within the park serves as an educational hub highlighting local ecology through interactive exhibits and programming.
At Newton Hills State Park in South Dakota, activities include boating, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, and family nature programs, with a swim beach and lake access inside the park.

The prime RV window in the Le Mars area runs from late April through mid-October. At Stone State Park, the campground is closed January 1 through March 31, off-peak in April, peak from May 1 through October 15, off-peak again through October 31, and closed November 1 through December 31. Shelters, cabins, and the lodge follow the same May to mid-October reservable window.
Summer is the busy season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill first, and two-night minimums apply on weekends May through October, with three-night minimums on holiday weekends and a maximum stay of 14 consecutive nights at Stone. Late spring can be wet, and thunderstorms are common through June.
Shoulder-season trips in September and early October usually bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fall color in the oak stands. Winter camping options are limited: Iowa's state park campground here closes, while most South Dakota parks welcome camping year-round, though comfort stations close down during the winter months.
How to book campsites
Iowa state park sites, including Stone State Park, are reserved through the Iowa DNR's online system operated by ReserveAmerica. The campground is 100% reservable with no first-come, first-served sites, and reservations open 3 months in advance. Bookings can also be made by phone through the Iowa State Parks reservation call center.
South Dakota state park sites, including Main - Newton Hills State Park, are booked through the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks system at campsd.com. Reservations open 90 days before arrival, except at Custer State Park, which accepts reservations one year before arrival. Cabins, lodges, and horse sites have separate inventory and often book out earlier than standard sites.
Sioux City North KOA Holiday reserves directly through the KOA website or by phone. The park operates seasonally with limited services in early spring, and the pool typically runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of hookup levels. At Stone State Park, sites are basic: the campground has 30 camp sites, 9 with electric hookup, with picnic tables and fire rings, plus modern restrooms with showers and flush toilets and an RV dump station near the campground. The park roads are narrow and hilly, so larger rigs should check site dimensions before booking.
Sioux City North KOA Holiday is the most amenity-heavy option in the area, with full-hookup pull-throughs, cabins, a seasonal heated pool, and a game area for kids.
At Newton Hills, expect a large, wooded loop with electric sites and modern facilities. 118 sites accommodate RVs and trailers between 41 and 75 feet, all sites are currently reservable, reservations can be booked up to 3 months in advance, and 118 sites have electric hookups.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Le Mars, Iowa?
RV rental in Le Mars, Iowa is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Upper Midwest. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes run $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from $250 to $400 nightly. Because Le Mars is a small town about 25 miles north of Sioux City, prices tend to run lower than in major metro markets. For a cheap RV rental Le Mars trip, aim for May, September, or early October when summer demand cools off. Pro tip: book a travel trailer that an owner can deliver to a nearby campground so you skip towing entirely and stretch your budget further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Le%20Mars%2C%20IowaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Le Mars?
Good news: a regular driver's license from your home state or country is all you need to rent an RV in Le Mars. Iowa does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every rig on RVezy. You will need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Grab an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before you fly in. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly the whole verification process wraps up, usually within a day.

Yes, every RV rental in Le Mars booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 75 toward the Loess Hills with peace of mind. That means you decide how much peace of mind feels right for your family RV trip in Le Mars. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it removes the biggest financial worry first-time renters have. Pro tip: review the coverage summary on the booking page so you know your deductible before you confirm your reservation.

Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (hosts do not), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. If life throws a curveball, like a blizzard rolling across Plymouth County or a family emergency, the policy is designed to be fair based on how far out you cancel. You will not see different rules from listing to listing because cancellations are handled by RVezy directly. Pro tip: book early to secure the best motorhome rental Le Mars options, since you have built-in flexibility right after reservation.

You can also take your pup along on a stroll downtown to spot the dozens of fiberglass ice cream cone sculptures around the Ice Cream Capital of the World. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, just to keep things smooth at pickup.
lemarsiowa.com/departments/parks_and_recreation/index.phpCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Le Mars?
Yes, RV delivery Le Mars is one of the most popular options, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a 30-foot rig down Central Avenue. Many hosts will deliver your RV directly to Willow Creek Campground, a friend's farm property outside town, or even to your hotel parking lot, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see hosts who offer this service, along with their per-mile fee. Delivery distances of 20 to 50 miles are common, reaching nearby Sioux City, Orange City, and Akron. Pro tip: ask the host to deliver the day before your check-in so you have a relaxed first night.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Le%20Mars%2C%20IowaHow far can I drive on a typical Le Mars RV rental?
You have plenty of room to roam. Most Le Mars hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for road trips. From Le Mars you can reach Sioux Falls, SD in about 80 miles, Omaha in 130 miles, Badlands National Park in roughly 360 miles, and the Iowa Great Lakes at Okoboji in about 95 miles, all easy multi-day loops. Extra miles typically cost $0.30 to $0.45 each, so it pays to estimate your route upfront. Pro tip: filter for Unlimited Mileage if you are planning a long RV road trip from Le Mars west toward Mount Rushmore or south to Kansas City.

Lazy H Campground sits on a 235-acre property between the Big Sioux River and the Loess Hills Byway with full hookups and Little Pearle Lake fishing. Scenic Park in Sioux City (25 minutes south) offers riverside hookups, and Stone State Park nearby has rustic sites with stunning Loess Hills views. Pro tip: Willow Creek fills up fast during Ice Cream Days in late June, so book early.
lemarsiowa.com/facilities/facility/details/Willow-Creek-Campground-4When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Le Mars?
Late May through mid-September is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Iowa, when daytime highs run from 75°F to 85°F and Willow Creek Campground is fully open with water, showers, and the swim beach in use. Late June is especially fun because Le Mars hosts Ice Cream Days, three full days of parades, concerts, and free scoops downtown. September delivers warm days, cool nights in the 50s, and far fewer mosquitoes, making it the locals' favorite. Winters here run from 8°F to 27°F in January with significant snow, so most campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: book a September trip and you'll catch harvest season across the Plymouth County cornfields.
weather.gov/fsd/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Le Mars?
You are going to do great, and Le Mars is honestly one of the easier places in the country to start. The town is flat, traffic on US-75 and Iowa Highway 60 is light, and there are no mountain passes, tunnels, or low bridges to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, dumping, leveling, and the basics of driving. Many also send you off with a printed cheat sheet. If you are truly nervous, choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental Le Mars, which drives much like a large van. Pro tip: do a 10-minute practice loop around the quiet streets near the Plymouth County Fairgrounds before heading out on the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Highway 75, run out of propane near the Big Sioux River, or lock yourself out at Willow Creek Campground at midnight, one phone call brings help. The roadside team handles towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. For mechanical or appliance issues, your host is your first call (most live within 30 miles of Le Mars and respond quickly), and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone contacts as soon as you book, well before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are the best road trips from Le Mars?
You're sitting on a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip from Le Mars. Top routes include: the Loess Hills Scenic Byway south to Council Bluffs (about 130 miles of dramatic ridgeline driving unique to western Iowa); Sioux Falls, SD and Falls Park (80 miles northwest, easy day trip); the Iowa Great Lakes at Okoboji (95 miles northeast, prime swimming and boating); Badlands National Park, SD (about 360 miles, doable in a weekend); and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo (130 miles south). Cross-border travel into South Dakota, Nebraska, and Minnesota is fully allowed on RVezy rentals. Travel to Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: the Loess Hills landscape exists in only two places on Earth, here and in China.
travelsouthdakota.com/trip-ideas/road-tripsWhat should I budget for fuel on a Le Mars RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the nightly rate, so it's smart to plan ahead. In northwest Iowa, regular gas typically runs $0.20 to $0.40 below the national average, which works in your favor. Expect 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 12 to 18 mpg for a campervan, and figure your tow vehicle's MPG drops by roughly 30% pulling a travel trailer. A 500-mile loop to Sioux Falls, Okoboji, and back to Le Mars in a Class C will run roughly $180 to $230 in gas. Pro tip: fill up in Le Mars or Sioux City before heading west, where stations get sparser through rural South Dakota.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Le Mars?
For Iowa state parks like Stone State Park near Sioux City or Gull Point at Okoboji, reservations open about 3 months ahead through the Iowa DNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends often book out within hours. Willow Creek Campground in Le Mars takes reservations directly through the city's parks department and fills quickly during Ice Cream Days in late June and the Plymouth County Fair in July. For private parks like Lazy H, 2 to 4 weeks notice is usually enough outside peak weekends. From November through March most Iowa state park campsites switch to walk-in only. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder exactly 90 days before your trip to grab the best sites the moment they open.
iowadnr.gov/places-go/state-parks/make-reservationWhat are driving conditions like around Le Mars?
Driving around Le Mars is refreshingly easy, especially compared to mountain or coastal RV destinations. Roads are flat, well-maintained, and the main routes (US-75, Iowa Highway 60, and I-29 just south) have generous shoulders and gentle curves. The big things to watch for: strong crosswinds blowing across open farmland (slow down in a tall rig), summer thunderstorms with hail, and farm equipment on county roads during planting and harvest seasons in May and October. Winter brings snow, ice, and occasional blizzards from November through March. Cell coverage is strong throughout Plymouth County. Pro tip: download an offline map of your route before heading into the Loess Hills, where signal can drop in the deeper valleys.

Lazy H Campground provides full hookups (water, electric, sewer), free WiFi, fishing, and cabins. Most Iowa state parks near Le Mars have modern restrooms and dump stations open from roughly May 1 through mid-October. Need to dump or refill water between stops? The Pilot Travel Center in Sioux City off I-29 has RV-friendly facilities. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump your tanks before leaving any campground, since dump stations close for the winter starting in mid-October across northwest Iowa.

Expect a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4 to 8 in bunks or convertible dinettes, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace, hot water, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an awning. Generators and solar are common on Class A, Class C, and toy hauler rentals. WiFi varies (some hosts include a mobile hotspot, others don't), so ask before booking if you need to work remotely. Pro tip: most owners stock the basics like pots, dishes, and bedding, but always confirm what's included on the listing page so you only pack what you actually need.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Le Mars?
Hosts in Le Mars offer a flexible menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include delivery and setup ($2 to $4 per mile), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor gear, bike racks, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees if you are traveling with a dog. Mileage policies vary: many include 100 free miles per night, some offer unlimited, and additional miles run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Le Mars, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during the initial booking request; hosts often discount them when you ask up front.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Le%20Mars%2C%20IowaHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. You pay your trip total securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is placed on your card (or pre-authorized) a few days before pickup. Deposits for Le Mars rentals typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and the hold is released within a few days after return assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, this little habit makes deposit returns smooth and protects both you and your host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Le Mars during winter or shoulder season?
Yes, you can rent an RV in Le Mars year-round, though winter trips take a little extra planning. From November through March, most public campgrounds (including Willow Creek and Iowa state park sites) switch to walk-in only with water shut off and shower buildings closed, since January temps drop to an average high of 27°F. Look for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working furnace, and consider parking at a private park with shore power. Winter is actually beautiful here: snow-covered Loess Hills, fewer crowds, and ice cream still served year-round at the Wells Visitor Center. Pro tip: message hosts before booking a winter trip to confirm the rig is truly four-season ready.
