Campgrounds near Lisbon, Iowa
Lisbon sits in Linn County in eastern Iowa, along Highway 30 between Cedar Rapids and the Cedar River corridor. The area offers a compact cluster of state park campgrounds within a short drive, giving RV travelers access to river bluffs, hardwood forests, and lake recreation without long transit days.
Palisades-Kepler State Park lies just southeast along the Cedar River near Mount Vernon and covers 840 acres of river bluffs, deep ravines, and hardwood forest. Lake Macbride State Park, one of Iowa's largest state parks at more than 2,100 acres, sits southwest near Solon and centers on an 812-acre lake. Wapsipinicon State Park, one of the oldest parks in the Iowa system, is a short drive north near Anamosa on the Wapsipinicon River.
Closer to Lisbon itself, Cedar Valley Grove Campground and Scales Pointe Camping and Boating provide additional private and lake-oriented options. Together these sites cover a range from electric and full-hookup RV pads to primitive tent loops, so trip planners can match the setup to rig size and comfort needs.
Things to do near Lisbon
Water recreation anchors most trips. Lake Macbride supports swimming at a designated beach, fishing, and boating on the 812-acre lake, with a seasonal concession offering pontoon, kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Cedar River at Palisades-Kepler holds channel catfish, bass, and walleye, and a modern boat ramp provides river access.
Hiking is strong across the cluster. Palisades-Kepler offers about five miles of rugged trails through forest and along river bluffs. Lake Macbride adds more than seven miles of multi-use trails winding through oak and hickory forest and restored prairie. Wapsipinicon has more than three miles of multi-use trails, including routes to Horse Thief Cave and Ice Cave, plus a nine-hole golf course adjacent to the park.
Historic CCC-era stonework at Palisades-Kepler and the prisoner-built stone arch bridge and lodge at Wapsipinicon give rainy-day options that still get families outside.

The Iowa state park camping season runs on a fixed calendar. Palisades-Kepler and Lake Macbride accept reservations April 1 through November 15 and are closed November 16 through March 31. Wapsipinicon runs a shorter season, with the campground closed November 1 through March 31.
Within those windows, peak season at Lake Macbride runs May 1 to October 15, with off-peak shoulder weeks in April and the back half of October and into mid-November. Modern facilities including water hydrants, showers, and dump stations at Palisades-Kepler are generally turned on by May 1 and shut down around mid-October depending on weather, so April and late-October trips may find limited services.
Spring brings wildflowers along the Palisades-Kepler trails and shorebird, waterfowl, and osprey activity around Lake Macbride. Summer is the warmest and wettest stretch, and holiday weekends fill fast. Fall delivers cooler nights and thinner crowds, and winter shifts recreation at Lake Macbride to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
How to book near Lisbon
Iowa state parks use a single online reservation platform run through ReserveAmerica at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com, with a phone backup at 1-877-427-2757. Palisades-Kepler, Lake Macbride, and Wapsipinicon campgrounds are all 100 percent reservable, and a reservation is required to camp.
The booking window opens three months ahead of the arrival date, and reservations can be made up until 10:00 pm CST on the day of arrival, which helps for last-minute trips. Weekend and holiday windows in summer at Lake Macbride and Palisades-Kepler are the tightest, so booking as soon as the three-month window opens is worthwhile.
A cancellation fee applies to all cancellations. Cancellations the day before arrival forfeit one night of camping fees, and cancellations on the arrival date forfeit two nights. Private campgrounds such as Cedar Valley Grove Campground and Scales Pointe Camping and Boating book directly through the operator.
What to expect on site
Site setups vary by park. Lake Macbride's modern north campground offers full-hookup and electric sites, a modern shower and restroom building, and a trailer dump station, while the south unit is a non-modern loop set near the lake with both flush and non-flush restrooms. Palisades-Kepler provides electric and non-electric sites with modern showers, restrooms, and a dump station. Wapsipinicon offers shaded sites with electric and non-electric options and showers, but no dump station on site.
Sites at the popular loops sit close together, and privacy is limited on holiday weekends. Access roads at Lake Macbride's north campground can be tight for larger rigs, so verify site length before booking.
Due to emerald ash borer concerns, Iowa DNR asks campers to buy firewood locally rather than transporting wood across county or state lines. Pets are allowed on leash and cannot be left unattended.
