Campgrounds near Montezuma, Iowa
Montezuma sits in Poweshiek County in east-central Iowa, roughly halfway between Des Moines and Iowa City and a short drive south of Interstate 80. It is the county seat of Poweshiek County, and it works well as a low-key base for RV travelers crossing the state or targeting the lakes and state parks north of I-80.
The closest developed camping is at Rock Creek State Park, a 1,697-acre park in Jasper County near Kellogg that includes numerous boat launches and docks, picnic grounds, camping grounds, and trails for horseback riding and hiking. Private options cluster along the I-80 corridor: Kellogg RV Park and Iowa's Best Burger Café are located just off I-80 at the Kellogg-Sully exit 173, and Outback Campground and Resort is a family-oriented park in the region. For travelers heading south toward Lake Red Rock, Eddyville Inn and RV Park provides a simple overnight option. Together these give travelers a mix of state-park lakeside sites and full-hookup private parks within roughly an hour of Montezuma.
Things to do near Montezuma
Water recreation drives most trips. Rock Creek Lake is one of central Iowa's most popular lakes, and any size boat motor may be operated at a maximum speed of 5 mph, with several boat ramps located around the lake. At the south boat ramp there is universally accessible fishing as well as boat slips available to rent from April 15 to October 15, and anglers can catch crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye and channel catfish from the lake.
On land, there are 8.5 miles of multi-use, non-paved trails around the perimeter of the lake for hiking, biking, skiing, horseback riding and snowmobiling, plus a 5.5 mile bike trail along the park's east side that goes to the town of Grinnell. Kellogg RV Park is located just 5 miles east of the Iowa Speedway in Newton, a 7/8-mile asphalt paved tri-oval race track, and Grinnell College events are a short drive east.

The prime RV window runs from late April through mid-October. Iowa state park reservations can be made up to 3 months in advance of the arrival date, and from November 1 through March 31 all campsites are walk-in only. Boat slips at Rock Creek are available to rent from April 15 to October 15, which frames the practical boating season.
Summer weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill quickly, especially waterfront electric sites. Spring and fall shoulder weeks are quieter but colder at night, with frost risk into April and again by late October. Winter travel is possible at year-round private parks, but state-park shower buildings and concessions shut down. Iowa DNR staff generally try to have park water on and shower buildings open by mid April and start closing them around mid-October.
Kellogg RV Park tries to stay open all year for nightly camping but occasionally closes because of snow, and weekly camping is available from April through October, which makes it a reliable off-season fallback.

Great experience! The RV was spotless and very comfortable! Everything worked as expected and it made my weekend camping trip very relaxing to have the RV delivered, setup, and ready to enjoy when I arrived. Koby was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I will be renting from him again in the future.

Jerry went above & beyond from start to finish. The camper was well stocked and everything worked! We would definitely rent from him again. Jerry is great- this app not so great.
Robert H. - Sep 2024
Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

How to book
State-park sites go through the Iowa DNR reservation system operated on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 3 months in advance of arrival, and from November 1 through March 31 all campsites are walk-in only. At Rock Creek State Park about one-fourth of the campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so waterfront electric sites should be booked as soon as the 3-month window opens for summer weekends; midweek stays are usually easier.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Kellogg RV Park takes reservations by phone and through third-party listings, and same-day availability is common for pass-through travelers. Outback Campground and Resort recommends advance reservations for peak weekends. For Eddyville Inn and RV Park, call ahead to confirm hookup type and rig length before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Rock Creek offers a traditional state-park feel. Campsites near the park's lake include both electric and non-electric sites and a modern restroom and shower building, and several campsites sit on the water's edge with beautiful views of Rock Creek Lake. Cell coverage is generally usable, and trees provide partial shade on most loops.
Kellogg RV Park sits a quarter mile off Interstate 80 at Exit 173 on an 8.5 acre property, and accommodates tear-drops, 5th wheels, or big rigs in 38 level, pull-thru camp sites. An F-5 rated tornado shelter is available near the entrance of the campground, useful during Iowa's spring severe-weather season. Expect audible interstate traffic in exchange for easy in-and-out access.
Outback Campground and Resort leans toward family recreation with pond and pool amenities on gravel sites.
