Campgrounds and RV parks near Moravia, IA

Moravia sits in the rolling hills of south-central Iowa, and its main draw for RV travelers is Rathbun Lake, an 11,000-acre reservoir that ranks among the largest in the state. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the lake for flood control on the Chariton River, and it now anchors more than 700 campsites across several parks, along with fishing, hunting, boating, a state fish hatchery, and the adjacent Honey Creek Resort. Honey Creek State Park sits on the north shore closest to town, covering 828 acres of timbered hills with a modern campground, full-hookup loops, and camping cabins. Indian Hills RV Park serves travelers wanting hookups closer to Moravia itself. A short drive south, Lake Wapello State Park adds a quieter no-wake alternative on a 289-acre lake, with a lakeside campground and family cabins. Camp Wapello, the former Boy Scout area now run by a preservation group, sits nearby, and Eddyville Inn and RV Park covers travelers passing through the Des Moines River corridor to the north.

Iowa state park sites, including Honey Creek State Park and Lake Wapello State Park, are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. The campgrounds are 100 percent reservable and a reservation is required. The standard booking window opens up to 12 months ahead of arrival, and reservations must be made at least four days before the arrival date. Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Rathbun Lake use a separate system. Island View, Buck Creek, Bridgeview, and Prairie Ridge are all operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and booked through Recreation.gov or its call center, with booking well in advance recommended for summer weekends. Stays are capped to prevent long-term occupancy. Campers may camp in the same loop a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-night period, and after the 14th night must physically move the unit to a different loop. Private options such as Indian Hills RV Park and Eddyville Inn and RV Park book directly with the operator.
