Camping near Muscatine, Iowa
Muscatine sits along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa, roughly halfway between the Quad Cities and Iowa City. RV renters have a compact mix of state-run parks, county sites, and private campgrounds within a short drive, most oriented around the river corridor or the wooded bluffs above it.
The closest state option is Fairport State Recreation Area, an Iowa DNR campground located directly on the Mississippi about seven miles east of town on Highway 22. Wildcat Den State Park lies roughly ten miles east of Muscatine and offers a primitive, forested alternative with sandstone bluffs and hiking trails. Cedar River Campground and Hidden River Campgrounds fill out the private-park options, while Big River State Forest across the river in Illinois adds a larger, quieter forest setting.
Between these sites, renters can choose electric river-access sites, no-frills tent-and-small-RV camping under pines, or something in between. Most stays center on the water: fishing, paddling, boat launches, and river-view sites are the common thread across the area.
Things to do near Muscatine
The Mississippi River drives most trip planning. Fairport State Recreation Area has two boat ramps and is known locally for bass, catfish, and walleye fishing, with towboats and river birds visible from the campsites. The nearby Fairport Fish Hatchery is a short trip for families with kids.
Wildcat Den State Park is the area's hiking anchor. Trails wind through sandstone bluffs and named formations including Steamboat Rock, Devil's Punch Bowl, and Fat Man's Squeeze. Inside the park, the Pine Creek Grist Mill, built in 1848 by Benjamin Nye, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and pairs well with the one-room Melpine schoolhouse for a short history stop.
In town, downtown Muscatine has riverfront paths, the Muscatine Art Center, and the Pearl Button Museum. Big River State Forest across the river adds three Mississippi boat launches, equestrian use, winter snowmobile trails, and a 60-mile network of firebreaks used by hikers and birders.

The main camping season around Muscatine runs from April through October, matching Iowa DNR park operations. At Fairport, park staff generally have water and shower buildings open by May 1 and start closing them around mid-October depending on the weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available for shoulder-season stays, but modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or late October.
Wildcat Den State Park runs peak season from May 1 through October 15, with off-peak windows in April and the second half of October. Online reservations are accepted from April 1 through October 31; from November 1 through March 31 the campground is open on a walk-in basis with no reservations required. The primitive campground has no electric service or showers year-round, so shoulder-season stays need self-contained rigs.
Summer weekends fill quickly, particularly around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Fall brings strong color along the bluffs at Wildcat Den and is a popular window for shorter, quieter trips before facilities shut down for winter.
How to book Muscatine campgrounds
Iowa state park sites, including Fairport State Recreation Area and Wildcat Den State Park, are reserved through the Iowa State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Both campgrounds are 100 percent reservable and a reservation is required. Fairport accepts reservations up to 3 months in advance and takes same-day bookings until 10 pm CST on the day of arrival. Wildcat Den opens reservations up to 12 months out but requires that bookings be made at least 4 days ahead of arrival.
Big River State Forest in Illinois is managed by the Illinois DNR, and camping permits are obtained from the park office; groups of 25 or more need advance approval from the site manager. Private options like Cedar River Campground and Hidden River Campgrounds book directly with the campground.
For summer weekends, plan to book eight to twelve weeks ahead, and check for cancellations closer to the date if a preferred loop is full.
What to expect at Muscatine campgrounds
Site types vary widely. Fairport State Recreation Area has electric hookups, modern restrooms and showers, a dump station, two boat ramps, and accommodates rigs up to about 55 feet. Wildcat Den is at the opposite end of the spectrum: non-electric primitive sites with vault toilets and a water spigot, no showers, and tight forested access that generally suits smaller rigs.
Big River State Forest at Shady Pines is also primitive, with water spigots and a dump station but no hookups at sites; cell service is limited. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, laundry, and family amenities that state sites do not.
Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties. Statewide quarantines have been removed, but the Iowa DNR still asks campers to buy firewood locally near the campground and burn it on site to slow the spread of forest pests.

The terrain is gently rolling, Highway 61 and U.S. 61 Bypass are smooth four-lane corridors, and downtown Muscatine has wide streets and easy riverfront parking on 2nd Street for short stops. Watch for two things: spring storms and tornado watches from April through June (check NOAA before you roll), and the narrow, winding road into Wildcat Den State Park, which is fine for rigs under 32 feet but tight for big Class A coaches. Winter brings ice and occasional snow from late November to March. Pro tip: avoid the Mississippi Drive low-clearance railroad underpass east of downtown, take Grandview Avenue instead.

muscatineiowa.gov/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

You pay the rental total and protection plan at checkout with a credit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup. The deposit is set separately from your booking payment and is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues, complete the pre-trip walkthrough with your host, photograph the interior and exterior at pickup, and return the RV clean with tanks emptied. Pro tip: that 15-minute walkthrough is your best friend.
