Campgrounds and RV parks near Polk City, IA

Saylorville Lake is the main draw. Boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, and fishing are all supported, with public boat ramps and swim beaches around the shoreline. Anglers pursue walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and northern pike. The Saylorville Lake Visitor Center adds an easy educational stop with lake overlooks. The paved Neal Smith Trail runs 24 miles between Des Moines and Big Creek State Park and connects the campgrounds on the east side of the lake, giving campers a long, flat ride straight from many sites. It is designated a National Recreation Trail. Hiking trails wind through prairie plantings and woodland on Corps land. Walnut Woods State Park adds trails along the Raccoon River through 260 acres of wooded bottomland. Polk City itself has a small downtown within a short drive of the lake campgrounds.

The main RV season around Polk City runs from spring through mid-fall. The Corps campgrounds at Saylorville Lake operate seasonally, with Prairie Flower typically open May 1 through October 25, Cherry Glen from April 15 through October 15, and Bob Shetler from May 1 through October 15. At Walnut Woods State Park, May 1 through October 15 is treated as the peak season, and the park is one of the few Iowa state parks that accepts campsite reservations year-round. Summer weekends fill fastest, especially around holidays. Reservations for peak weekends should be made well in advance, and cancellations are common enough that late openings do appear. Because Saylorville Lake is a flood-control reservoir, high water in spring or after heavy summer rain can close beaches and low-lying day-use areas while camping loops often stay open. Winter camping options are limited. From November 1 through March 31, most Iowa state park campsites are walk-in only because of unpredictable winter weather. Water, showers, and dump stations at Iowa state parks are typically turned off from around mid-October until roughly May 1.

Corps sites around Saylorville tend to be spacious and level, with paved pads in the newer loops and generous spacing between neighbors. Electric hookups are standard, but individual water and sewer hookups are limited, so arrive with a full fresh tank or fill at the designated water spigots. A central dump station serves each campground and can back up on Sunday mornings. Restrooms include flush toilets, hot showers, and drinking water. Walnut Woods offers a mix of standard electric, full-hookup, and RV-only sites. Private parks nearby generally offer full hookups, showers, and laundry. Expect mosquitoes near the river and lake in summer. Quiet hours at Corps campgrounds run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and UTVs, ATVs, and golf carts are not allowed inside the campgrounds.
