Campgrounds and RV parks near Rock Rapids, IA

Rock Rapids sits in Lyon County in the far northwest corner of Iowa, within an easy drive of state parks in three states. The closest developed campgrounds cluster north into Minnesota and west into South Dakota, where Sioux quartzite bedrock breaks the surrounding farmland into cliffs, creeks, and pockets of hardwood forest. Blue Mounds State Park, about 20 miles north near Luverne, Minnesota, protects a large prairie remnant and a resident bison herd. To the west near Garretson, South Dakota, Palisades State Park lines Split Rock Creek with quartzite spires, and Split Rock Park Campground sits just minutes away as a municipal alternative. Farther west toward Canton, South Dakota, Newton Hills State Park offers two separate camping areas: the Main campground with electric loops and a swim beach on Lake Lakota, plus a dedicated Horse Camp on the north side of the park for travelers bringing equestrian trailers.

Each state uses its own reservation system. Minnesota state park sites, including Blue Mounds, can be reserved online at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. Overnight guests also need a state park vehicle permit in addition to a camping or lodging reservation. South Dakota parks, including Palisades and both loops at Newton Hills, use the state's campsd.com system. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-710-2267 or online through Go Outdoors South Dakota, within 90 days of arrival. A South Dakota park entrance license is required for vehicles. Split Rock Park Campground in Garretson is a municipal option handled separately from the state systems and is worth checking when Palisades fills. For any of these parks, reserve as far in advance as the system allows for summer weekends.
