Campgrounds and RV parks near Seymour, IA

Water recreation drives most trips. Rathbun Lake is a focal point of the area, with fishing and paddling from Honey Creek, while Lake Wapello offers a no-wake lake with a sand beach. Anglers fish for bluegill, red ear sunfish, and channel catfish at Lake Wapello, with largemouth bass catch-and-release only. Hikers and mountain bikers head to Stephens State Forest. The Whitebreast Unit has two stocked ponds, three equestrian campgrounds, and one group-camp area, plus 20 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and equestrian riding. At Honey Creek, visitors can hike five miles of multi-use trails or follow the Woodland Interpretive trail past 17 ancient Woodland Native American mounds. Wildlife watching is strong across all three parks, with deer, turkey, waterfowl, and bald eagles common.

The Iowa state park camping season runs primarily April through October. The Honey Creek campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31, and during the open season it is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. Peak booking demand runs Memorial Day through mid-October, with holiday weekends filling first. Shoulder-season RVers should plan for reduced services. Park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by early May, and typically start closing shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available in April and late October, but call ahead to confirm. Stephens State Forest operates on a different rhythm. Camping is available year-round in the forest's non-modern campgrounds in the Lucas and Whitebreast Units, which have no electricity but do have pit toilets, and several sites are set up for equestrian use. Equestrian trails can close temporarily after heavy rain.

Site quality varies sharply by park. Lake Wapello's campground contains full hook-up, electric, and non-electric sites near the lake with modern showers and restrooms nearby, and can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet, offering drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in sites. Honey Creek's campground offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites plus rustic cabins near Rathbun Lake. Stephens State Forest sites are primitive. There are no showers and no modern restrooms at the forest campgrounds; pit latrines are available. Roads within the forest units are gravel and can be rough after wet weather. Buy firewood locally. Iowa DNR asks campers to buy firewood near the park and burn it all during the stay to slow the spread of forest pests. Pets are allowed on a six-foot leash across all state park and forest campgrounds.
