Campgrounds and RV parks near Stanwood, IA

River recreation drives most trips here. The Cedar and Wapsipinicon rivers support paddling, tubing, and fishing for smallmouth bass, catfish, and panfish. Cedar River Campground and Hidden River Campgrounds both sit close to the water for easy launch access, while Blue Inn Campground offers a quieter base north of the highway. At Wapsipinicon State Park, visitors can hike more than three miles of multi-use trails winding through wooded areas and open grass prairies, follow paths to Horse Thief Cave and Ice Cave, and use those same trails for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter. A nine-hole golf course sits adjacent to the park. Cedar Valley Grove Campground works well for groups looking for on-site amenities between river outings.

Eastern Iowa has a four-season humid continental climate, and the camping calendar reflects that. At Wapsipinicon State Park, park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them around mid-October depending on weather. Camping in April or later in October is possible, but there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available. Private campgrounds along the Cedar River generally follow a similar April-to-October pattern, though exact opening dates vary by property. Late spring and early summer bring the heaviest rain and the highest river levels, which can affect low-lying riverside sites. Midsummer is warm and humid, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill quickly at both state park and private campgrounds. September and early October are the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fall color along the river bluffs. By late October, most sites shut down for the winter.

Sites in this part of Iowa tend to be shaded and set among mature hardwoods, with a mix of gravel and grass pads. The Wapsipinicon State Park campground is shady, sits atop bluffs overlooking the river, and offers both non-electric and electric campsites with modern showers and restrooms. Campers should verify dump station availability directly with the park before arrival. Cell coverage is generally usable along the Highway 30 corridor and thins out in the river valleys. Expect mosquitoes and ticks from late May through August, and pack for cool nights even in midsummer. Stanwood itself is small, so plan to resupply groceries, propane, and RV parts in Cedar Rapids, Mount Vernon, or Anamosa before pulling into camp.
