Campgrounds and RV parks near Strawberry Point, IA

Strawberry Point sits in Clayton County in northeast Iowa's Driftless-influenced hill country, about three miles north of Iowa's oldest state park. Backbone State Park lies in the valley of the Maquoketa River, approximately three miles south of Strawberry Point in Delaware County, which makes the town a practical basecamp for RV travelers targeting the park's lakes, trout stream, and limestone ridges. Most named campgrounds within a short drive are either state-run or family-run resorts along the Turkey and Volga rivers. The closest option is South Lake at Backbone State Park, a modern loop with 49 non-electric sites, 49 electric sites, two shower buildings, a playground, and a dump station. Further afield, the Lakeview campground at Volga River State Recreation Area offers 34 full hook-up sites plus 7 electric sites with water, and private resorts including Deer Run Resort in Elkader and Skip-A-Way Resort in Clermont add full-hookup capacity along the Turkey River corridor. Motorsport fans staying in the area also have Tri-State Raceway and RV Park in Earlville, which caters to race weekends and general RV travel.

Iowa state park sites are handled through a single system. Campsites and year-round cabins at Backbone State Park can be reserved through the Iowa State Parks online reservation system, which runs on ReserveAmerica, and the campgrounds are 100 percent reservable. The camping booking window opens three months ahead up to same day, until 10 pm CST for campsites, so mark the calendar roughly 90 days out for peak summer weekends. Cabins book on a longer horizon, up to 12 months in advance, and Backbone's cabins fill quickly on weekends. Lakeview at Volga River State Recreation Area uses the same three-month camping window, and popular summer weekends can sell out the day the window opens. Private resorts such as Deer Run Resort, Skip-A-Way Resort, and Tri-State Raceway and RV Park are booked directly with each property.
