Campgrounds near Sully, Iowa
Sully sits in Jasper County in central Iowa, roughly midway between Des Moines and Grinnell along the I-80 corridor. The area is farm country with several lakes and reservoirs within a short drive, and most RV camping options cluster around those water bodies or just off the interstate.
The closest full state park camping is at Rock Creek State Park, located near Kellogg in eastern Jasper County, with nearly 200 campsites and several sites on the water's edge or in wooded areas. To the south, Elk Rock State Park sits on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest body of water, with more than 50,000 acres of public land in the surrounding Red Rock area.
Private options round out the mix. The Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey sits along the I-80 corridor east of Des Moines with full-hookup RV sites and pull-throughs for larger rigs. Kellogg RV Park and Shady Oaks RV Campground offer smaller, closer-in stays for travelers who want a base near Sully itself.
Things to do near Sully
Water recreation is the main draw. Rock Creek Lake is one of central Iowa's most popular boating lakes, with a 5 mph maximum motor speed and several boat ramps around the lake, and anglers can catch crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish. More than eight miles of non-paved, multi-use trails wind around the lake, and a five-mile biking trail on the east side connects to the town of Grinnell.
At Lake Red Rock, Elk Rock State Park offers two boat ramps, thirteen miles of multi-use trails, and dedicated equestrian facilities including horse stalls, hitching rails, and a riding arena. The lake is a major stopping point for migrating white pelicans and bald eagles in spring and fall.
Off the water, visitors can head to the Iowa Speedway in Newton, the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge near Prairie City with its bison and elk enclosure, and Pella's Dutch heritage shops northeast of Sully.

Central Iowa has a humid continental climate with strong seasonal swings. Summers are warm and bring the wettest conditions, precipitation is spread relatively evenly through the year, and winters are cold with regular snowfall while also being the driest season. Late spring through early fall is the primary camping window.
State park operating windows are strict. At Rock Creek, the campground is closed January 1 through March 31, off-peak from April 1 through April 30, peak from May 1 through October 15, off-peak from October 16 through November 15, and closed after that. Elk Rock follows a similar pattern: closed January through March, off-peak in April, peak May 1 through October 15, off-peak in late October, and closed November 1 through December 31.
Weekend occupancy runs high, especially in the RV sections, while weekday visits offer more space and quiet. Park staff generally have water and shower buildings open by mid-April and start shutting them down around mid-October, so shoulder-season campers should confirm modern facilities with the park office.

Great experience! The RV was spotless and very comfortable! Everything worked as expected and it made my weekend camping trip very relaxing to have the RV delivered, setup, and ready to enjoy when I arrived. Koby was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I will be renting from him again in the future.

Jerry went above & beyond from start to finish. The camper was well stocked and everything worked! We would definitely rent from him again. Jerry is great- this app not so great.
Robert H. - Sep 2024
Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

How to book a site
Iowa state parks use a single online reservation system. Rock Creek is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through November 15 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival, and Elk Rock uses the same system with reservations April 1 through October 31. Standard sites can generally be reserved up to three months in advance, and about one quarter of Rock Creek sites are held for first-come, first-served use.
High-demand summer weekends fill early, so booking as soon as the three-month window opens is the safest approach. For private parks, book directly through the KOA site or the campground office. Kellogg RV Park and Shady Oaks RV Campground handle reservations through their own websites or by phone and are worth calling first if arriving without a booking.
What to expect on the ground
State park loops in this area lean rustic-modern. Rock Creek has both electric and non-electric sites and a modern restroom and shower building, and Elk Rock provides both electric and non-electric sites with a modern shower building, trailer dumping station, and a self-dispensing firewood machine next to the shower building. Sites tend to be gravel with fire rings and picnic tables, and most Rock Creek sites cannot accommodate rigs longer than about 40 to 50 feet.
The Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey is the most amenity-rich option nearby, with full-hookup sites, a swimming pool, a catch-and-release fishing pond, a fenced dog park, a nature trail, disc golf, a playground, and a jumping pad, plus laundry, showers, and a dump station. Cell coverage is generally reliable across carriers in the Newton-Kellogg-Grinnell corridor.
