Campgrounds and RV parks near Waukon, IA

Waukon sits in Allamakee County in the far northeast corner of Iowa, inside the Driftless Area. The surrounding landscape is unlike the flat corn country most travelers picture: steep forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and cold-water trout streams shaped by karst geology that escaped the last ice age. RV renters use Waukon as a base for the Upper Iowa River, the Mississippi River bluffs, and the region's public forests. Private parks close to town include Upper Iowa Resort and Rental and Sampson Springs Campground, both convenient for river paddling trips. Pine Bluff Campsites and Red Barn Resort add family-oriented options with more full-service sites, while Spook Cave & Campground pairs camping with a guided underground boat tour. The main public alternative is Yellow River State Forest, roughly a half-hour drive southeast of Waukon off Highway 76, a hardwood-and-pine forest of more than 8,900 acres with four reservable campgrounds in the Paint Creek Unit.

State forest sites at Yellow River are booked through the Iowa State Parks reservation system, and all four campgrounds in the Paint Creek Unit are reservable. The Iowa reservation window opens up to three months ahead of arrival, and same-day changes are accepted until 10 p.m. Central time. From November 1 through March 31, advance reservations pause and sites revert to walk-in only. Private campgrounds around Waukon, including Upper Iowa Resort and Rental, Sampson Springs Campground, Pine Bluff Campsites, Red Barn Resort, and Spook Cave & Campground, take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holidays sell out first, especially river-access sites, so plan private-park bookings well ahead for July and August. Fall color weekends in October fill quickly as well.
