Campgrounds and RV parks near West Union, IA

Volga River State Recreation Area anchors outdoor activity in the region. One of the major features of the park is its 22 miles of multi-use trails, used by equestrian riders, mountain bikers, hikers, snowmobilers, and cross-country skiers depending on the season. Anglers can fish Frog Hollow Lake for bass, catfish, and bluegill, and the Volga River is popular for kayak and canoe float trips. Boating is allowed on Frog Hollow Lake, with a universally accessible boat ramp, and any size motor can operate at no-wake speeds. The Don Avenson Archery range sits west of the scenic overlook and includes a trail with 40 targets open from mid-April through the end of September. Families traveling with kids can add on-site attractions at Skip-A-Way Resort, including a splash pad, mini golf, and paddle boats.

The main RV season in northeast Iowa runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and generally start closing down shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. Campers arriving in April or later in October have no guarantee modern facilities will be available. At Volga River State Recreation Area, the campground is closed from November 1 through March 31, with an off-peak shoulder in April and again from mid to late October. Summer weekends draw the strongest demand, especially for waterfront sites at Frog Hollow Lake and family-oriented private resorts. Skip-A-Way Resort operates roughly mid-April through mid-October and books quickly for holiday weekends. From November 1 through March 31 all Iowa state park campsites are walk-in only, with advance reservations unavailable due to unpredictable winter weather, though a small number of parks accept reservations in November and March. Trails at Volga River remain available in winter for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing when conditions allow.

Expect well-kept modern facilities rather than resort-style landscaping at the state site. Most sites at Lakeview are on gravel or concrete pads that are fairly level, with pull-throughs paved in concrete. Shade varies, with the back loop offering better cover while many other sites are more exposed. The bathhouse has clean restrooms with private shower stalls, and a dump station sits at the campground entrance. Sites are spaced with reasonable privacy. Cell coverage is limited in the Volga River valley, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is wise. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across many Iowa counties, and the entire state is under state and federal firewood transport quarantines, so visitors should not transport firewood across county or state lines. Buy firewood locally near the campground.
