Campgrounds and RV parks near Wyoming, IA

Cave exploring is the signature activity in the area. Dancehall Cave is approximately 800 feet long with three entrances (upper, middle, and lower) and is the largest cave in Maquoketa Caves State Park, allowing a person to walk upright most of the way through it. The caves are closed each year from November 15 through April 1 as they serve as a hibernaculum for overwintering bats, so plan cave trips in the warmer months. At Wapsipinicon State Park, families can hike to Horse Thief Cave and Ice Cave, walk the historic three-span bowstring arch bridge, and use the nine-hole golf course, boat ramp, and picnic shelters. Activities include bird watching, boating, canoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, picnicking, snowmobiling, and golfing. At Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Monticello, on-site amenities include a heated pool, a WIBIT inflatable water course on the lake, a splash pad, jumping pillows, laser tag, pedal boats, and river tubing on the Maquoketa.

Peak camping season in eastern Iowa runs from late spring through early fall. Summer is the busiest time at Maquoketa Caves, when the interpretive center is open on weekends and rangers run educational programs. The caves themselves close each year from November 15 through April 1 for bat hibernation, though hiking trails and much of the park remain open outside the campground season. State park campgrounds in the area follow the Iowa DNR seasonal calendar. The Maquoketa Caves campground is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations from March 1 through November 30 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival, and the campground is closed each year from December 1 through February 28. Wapsipinicon State Park is open year-round for day use, with a shaded campground plus reservable shelters and lodges. Private parks run a shorter season. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Monticello is open from April through October, so weekends in June, July, and August book out earliest. Fall brings cool nights, changing hardwoods, and thinner crowds at both state parks.

Expect wooded, shaded sites on rolling terrain, with limestone and sandstone bluffs and river frontage the dominant scenery. The Maquoketa Caves campground sits under a dense canopy of mature trees, and most sites include 20/30/50-amp electric hookups with water available in the loop. Cell coverage is reasonable near towns but can drop inside the park valleys. Rig size matters. The Wapsipinicon campground sits atop bluffs above the Wapsipinicon River and accommodates RVs up to about 60 feet at some sites, though reviewers note level pads are limited. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Monticello offers full-hookup pull-through sites with 30 and 50-amp service suited to big rigs. Bring a headlamp and closed-toe shoes for the caves, and buy firewood locally. To reduce the spread of emerald ash borer, campers are advised to purchase firewood near the campground rather than transporting it from home. Groceries and fuel are easiest in Anamosa, Monticello, or Maquoketa.
