Campgrounds and RV parks near Americus, KS

Americus sits in Lyon County in east-central Kansas, on the western edge of the Flint Hills region between Emporia and Council Grove. The town is small, so most RV travelers use it as a quiet base and drive short distances to state park, Army Corps of Engineers, and private campgrounds spread across the surrounding tallgrass prairie. The closest developed public option is Eisenhower State Park, located on the north shore of Melvern Lake in Osage County, about 30 miles northeast of Emporia and 35 miles south of Topeka. Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Council Grove Lake sit a similar distance to the northwest. Private RV parks in the area include Crossroads RV Park and Campground and Mineral Springs RV Park, which offer hookups for travelers who need utility sites. Mill Creek Campground, a long-running private park in Paxico, is another option to the north with full hookups and creekside sites. Camp Wood YMCA near Elmdale operates a youth resident camp in the Flint Hills and is not a public RV park; it is a notable local landmark rather than a place to park a rig.

Kansas state parks, including Eisenhower State Park, use the Reserve America system. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance and tend to fill quickly during peak weekends, so booking early is wise. A state park vehicle permit is required year-round, and camping stays are limited to 14 consecutive days at any one campground. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Council Grove Lake are booked through Recreation.gov, which typically opens reservations several months ahead. Many Corps sites close for winter, so check individual facility pages before planning an off-season trip. Private parks such as Crossroads RV Park and Campground, Mineral Springs RV Park, and Mill Creek Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites.
