Campgrounds and RV parks near Auburn, KS

Lake Shawnee offers fishing, boating, sailing, and swimming, and the surrounding park includes foot and bike trails, a golf course, marina, tennis courts, shelter houses, ball diamonds, and gardens. The lake is a natural anchor for family days, with a swim beach accessible only to registered campers at Lake Shawnee Campground. Topeka itself adds indoor options for hot or rainy days, including the Kansas State Capitol, the Evel Knievel Museum, the Kansas Museum of History, and the Topeka Zoo. Downtown restaurants and grocery stores are a short drive from most campgrounds. For a bigger outdoor day, Clinton Lake and Perry Lake are both within roughly an hour, adding hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and larger swim beaches. Clinton State Park sits on the north shore of the roughly 7,000-acre Clinton Reservoir, with boating, swimming, fishing, and an extensive network of hiking and biking trails.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season around Auburn. May is typically the wettest month in the Topeka area, with frequent thunderstorms and the region's peak tornado risk, so travelers should monitor NWS Topeka forecasts and know where storm shelters are located at each park. Summer brings heat and humidity, with afternoon highs commonly in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. Lakes, shaded loops, and full-hookup sites with 50-amp service, needed to run air conditioning, are in highest demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Lake Shawnee Campground applies a three-night minimum stay over Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch, with cooler nights, drier weather, and good foliage along the lake shorelines. Winters are cold enough that many amenities close: at Clinton State Park, water at campsites is turned off in November (weather permitting) and usually turned back on by mid-April, with water available at a dump station and frost-free hydrants in the interim.

Most parks in the Auburn and Topeka corridor offer level gravel or concrete pads, 30/50-amp electric, and water hookups, with sewer at a portion of sites and central dump stations for the rest. Lake Shawnee Campground offers water and electric hookups at most sites, no sewer at individual sites, and a dump station near the entrance, plus shower houses, restrooms, and laundry. Rigs of all sizes are common along the I-70 corridor, and pull-through sites are available at several parks for easier arrivals. Sites at busy lakeside loops can be close together with limited privacy, so families who want space should ask about specific loops when booking. Pets are widely welcome on leash, and quiet hours are enforced at county and state parks. Cell coverage is generally reliable throughout the area, and grocery, propane, and fuel are within a short drive of every campground listed.
