RV camping near Augusta, Kansas
Augusta sits in Butler County in south-central Kansas, about 20 miles east of Wichita and on the western edge of the Flint Hills. It works well as a base for RV travelers exploring the tallgrass prairie region, with quick access to El Dorado Reservoir to the north and the Wichita metro to the west.
The main draw for campers is El Dorado State Park, conveniently located at the edge of the Flint Hills with about 2,000 acres of park and 4,000 acres of wildlife area surrounding 8,000 acres of water with 98 miles of shoreline. The park is divided into several areas around the reservoir, most of which cater to RVs.
Closer to town, private options like 4 Mile Creek Resort - RV Park and Campground and K and R RV and Mobile Home Park handle full-hookup stays, while Deer Grove RV Park sits just outside El Dorado. Within the state park, Walnut River Area and Bluestem Point are the two largest developed RV loops.
Things to do near Augusta
El Dorado Reservoir anchors most trip plans. All four state park areas include boat ramps, camping facilities, and hiking trails, with a bait shop and swimming beach at Bluestem Point, a marina in the Shady Creek Area, and an amphitheater and swimming pond in the Walnut River Area. Fishing for crappie, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish is a primary draw across the lake.
Land-based activities are strong too. The park is laced with hiking trails, biking trails, and horse trails, and a 17-mile shoreline trail links the horse camping areas. Walnut River Area connects directly to the amphitheater, swimming pond, and multiple nature trails, making it a practical pick for families.
Day trips into Wichita add museums, zoos, and restaurants when weather turns.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Summers around Augusta are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common, and the temperature typically varies from 25°F to 93°F and is rarely below 10°F or above 103°F across the year. Holiday weekends at El Dorado State Park fill early, especially at reservable loops in Bluestem Point.
Spring brings the strongest severe-weather risk. South-central Kansas sits in a corridor where tornado activity peaks from April into June, so RV travelers should monitor NOAA weather radio and know where the nearest sturdy shelter is in each campground. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and steady fishing.
Winter camping is possible but limited. El Dorado has 5 small sleeper cabins and 2 deluxe cabins in the Bluestem Point area and 3 deluxe cabins in the Walnut River area that can be reserved year-round, and some private parks stay open, though water service at hookup sites can be shut off during hard freezes.
How to book Augusta campgrounds
El Dorado State Park uses the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reservation system. Reservations are accepted by telephone (MasterCard, Visa or Discover), online, or in person. Sites at Bluestem Point are reservable, while some loops in the Walnut River area operate first-come, first-served, so calling ahead to confirm site type is worthwhile before arrival.
Entry requires a Kansas state park vehicle permit in addition to the camping fee, purchased at the gatehouse or online. Cancellation of a cabin or campsite reservation 30 days or more prior to arrival date results in a refund of 100% minus the reservation fee, ORMS fees, and issuance fee, with reduced refunds inside that window.
Private parks like 4 Mile Creek Resort - RV Park and Campground, Deer Grove RV Park, and K and R RV and Mobile Home Park book directly by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on site
Expect open, prairie-style campgrounds with limited mature shade at most lake loops. In total there are 63 full hookup sites and 126 water/electric only sites spread across three different areas in Walnut River, and sites are very wide, flat and spacious, which makes big-rig maneuvering straightforward. Amenities in Walnut River include the amphitheater, several hiking trails, swimming beach, picnic shelters, playgrounds, toilets, showers, laundry facilities and dump stations.
Cell service is generally usable but not fast. Cell phone reception should be achievable within the campgrounds. Wind is a constant factor across the Flint Hills, so pack awning tie-downs and stake out anything loose.
Private parks near Augusta trend smaller and quieter, with Deer Grove RV Park located just outside of El Dorado and featuring laundry, free wifi, a shower house, picnic tables and a dog park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Augusta, KS
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Augusta, KS?
RV rental in Augusta is one of the most affordable ways to explore south-central Kansas. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $80 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes around $150 to $225 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes between $200 and $300 per night. Because Augusta sits in Butler County just east of Wichita, prices tend to run lower than major coastal markets. To save even more, book mid-week, travel during shoulder seasons (April or October), or look for hosts offering weekly discounts. A cheap RV rental in Augusta becomes even more budget-friendly when you split costs with friends or family for a Flint Hills weekend getaway.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Augusta%2C%20KansasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Augusta, KS?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Augusta, as long as the rig weighs under 26,001 pounds, which covers nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the RVezy platform. Kansas only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for vehicles above that threshold, and most personal-use RVs you'll book stay well below it. You'll also need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're ready to hit Highway 54.

Every RV rental in Augusta through RVezy automatically includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive off knowing the big worries are already handled. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host). It provides meaningful financial peace of mind for renters exploring the Flint Hills or heading down to El Dorado Reservoir. Pro tip: take a few quick walk-around photos at pickup with your host. It's a simple habit that keeps everything smooth at drop-off.

Booking is low-risk by design. RVezy (not the host) sets a clear cancellation policy for every Augusta RV rental, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you have time to confirm plans. Cancellation outcomes depend on factors like how far in advance you cancel. You don't have to negotiate with the host; RVezy's support team handles it. If your host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides credits. Full details live on the RVezy Help Center, but the short version: go ahead and book that Flint Hills weekend with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Augusta?
Absolutely, and you've got plenty of options. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Augusta, KS, and you can filter directly for 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy to see them all in one click. Once you're on the road, Augusta itself is dog-friendly: Garvin Park has open green space for a stretch break, and El Dorado State Park (about 20 minutes northeast) welcomes leashed pets on its hiking and shoreline trails. 4 Mile Creek Resort just outside town is also pet-friendly and has space for your dog to roam. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and bring a copy of your dog's vaccination records in case a campground asks.
ksoutdoors.gov/state-parks/locations/el-doradoCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Augusta?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many hosts on RVezy offer RV delivery in Augusta, KS and the surrounding Butler County area, meaning they'll tow or drive the RV to your campsite, set it up on the pad, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is especially popular at El Dorado State Park's Bluestem Point and Walnut River campgrounds, where setup can take a first-timer a while. Look for the 'Delivery' filter on the listing search, then message the host with your destination address. Delivery fees vary by distance, but most renters say it's worth every penny for a stress-free start.

ksdot.gov/bureaus/burtransplan/maps/maps-statewide.aspWhere are the best campgrounds near Augusta, KS?
You'll have your pick of great spots within a short drive. The best campgrounds near Augusta start with El Dorado State Park (about 18 miles northeast), the largest state park in Kansas with 1,100 campsites across four areas (Bluestem Point, Boulder Bluff, Walnut River, and Shady Creek) along an 8,000-acre reservoir. 4 Mile Creek Resort right in Augusta offers 78 full-hookup sites with fishing and a peaceful lake setting. Santa Fe Lake (about 10 minutes north) is a quiet local favorite with electric sites. For something a bit different, Camp the Range RV Park offers a working-ranch vibe. Pro tip: reserve El Dorado sites through the Kansas State Parks reservation system as soon as your dates are set, especially for summer weekends.
ksoutdoors.gov/about-kdwp/where-we-work/state-parks/el-doradoWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Augusta?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. The best time for RV camping in Augusta, KS is mid-April through early June, when highs sit in the 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range and the Flint Hills explode with green prairie grass, and then again from mid-September through late October, when highs cool to the 60s and 70s and humidity drops sharply. Summers are hot and muggy with July highs averaging around 90 degrees Fahrenheit (heat index often pushing 100+), and winters can dip into the 20s with occasional ice storms. Local insider tip: aim for late April or early May to catch wildflowers blooming at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, a quick drive northeast of Augusta.
weather.gov/ict/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great shape, and you're not alone, first time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios on RVezy. Every Augusta host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, awning, water hookups, holding tanks, slide-outs, and propane so you leave knowing exactly how everything works. You can also message your host any time during your trip with questions, and RVezy's 24/7 support is one tap away. Augusta is an ideal beginner town: roads are wide, traffic is light, and you're only 20 minutes from El Dorado State Park's spacious pull-through sites. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much more like a large truck than a bus.
ksoutdoors.gov/about-kdwp/where-we-work/state-parks/el-doradoWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
Help is just a phone call away, 24 hours a day. Every Augusta RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. If you have a mechanical issue heading down Highway 54 toward El Dorado or out on K-196, you'll call the roadside number and a local provider gets dispatched to you. For questions about the RV itself, like how to reset the inverter or refill propane, your host is your best first call. RVezy customer support stays available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number and save your host's number to your phone before pulling out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Augusta RV rental across state lines?
Yes, and it's one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Augusta. Most hosts allow interstate travel, which opens up a whole region: Oklahoma (Tulsa is about 2.5 hours south), Missouri (the Ozarks are around 4 hours east), Colorado (Denver via I-70 is roughly 9 hours west), and Arkansas. Just confirm cross-state travel with your host through the RVezy message thread before booking so the protection package and roadside assistance fully apply to your route. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: a popular loop from Augusta is heading southeast to Beaver Bend State Park in Oklahoma, then back up through the Flint Hills, beautiful in fall.
ksdot.gov/bureaus/burtransplan/maps/maps-statewide.aspWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget?
Fuel is usually the biggest road-trip expense, but it's very manageable from Augusta. Expect roughly 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class B campervan, 8 to 12 MPG for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 10 MPG for a Class A, and your tow vehicle's normal MPG minus 25 to 35 percent if you're pulling a travel trailer. Kansas gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Augusta has several stations along Highway 54 and Ohio Street, including a Casey's and a Kwik Shop that are easy to navigate in a larger rig. Pro tip: plan fuel stops at truck-friendly stations like the Love's just off the Kansas Turnpike near El Dorado, where you'll have plenty of room to pull through.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Augusta?
Earlier is better, especially for the popular spots. For El Dorado State Park, the biggest draw near Augusta, reservations open up to 12 months in advance through the Kansas State Parks reservation system (run by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks), and the lakefront sites at Bluestem Point and Walnut River fill up fast for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. For 4 Mile Creek Resort and Santa Fe Lake, book at least 2 to 4 weeks ahead in summer. Mid-week stays are usually wide open even with little notice. Local insider tip: if El Dorado is full, try Harvey County East Park about 45 minutes northwest, it's a hidden gem with shaded sites and rarely fills up.
ksoutdoors.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Augusta?
Driving an RV around Augusta is genuinely easy compared to most U.S. cities. Roads are wide, terrain is gently rolling, and the main routes (U.S. Highway 54/400, K-196, and the Kansas Turnpike I-35) have generous lanes and shoulders. The two things to watch for: strong crosswinds, which are common on the open prairie and can push high-profile RVs, and severe spring weather (April through June is peak season for thunderstorms, hail, and the occasional tornado watch). Download a weather radar app and pull off at a sturdy structure if storms get serious. Winter ice storms are rare but real, so check forecasts December through February. Pro tip: avoid driving the Turnpike in heavy crosswinds; take Highway 254 instead.
kandrive.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Augusta?
You'll find well-equipped campgrounds throughout the area. Most parks near Augusta offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms with showers, and on-site dump stations. El Dorado State Park has all of the above plus swimming beaches, a general store at Bluestem Point, six boat ramps, and 98 miles of shoreline. 4 Mile Creek Resort adds full sewer hookups and fishing access. For dumping and freshwater fills on travel days, the Love's Travel Stop near El Dorado off I-35 and several Kansas state parks accept day-use dump fees. Pro tip: if you're using state parks more than twice, the Kansas annual vehicle permit pays for itself quickly, and it's transferable between vehicles.
ksoutdoors.gov/about-kdwp/where-we-work/state-parks/el-doradoWhat's inside the RVs I can rent in Augusta?
More than you'd expect, even on a budget. A typical motorhome rental in Augusta, KS includes sleeping for 4 to 8 people (a mix of queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with a fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and sink, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for traveling passengers. Many listings also include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and Bluetooth speakers, and some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots or solar setups. Each listing page shows exactly what's included with photos and a feature list. Pro tip: check the 'sleeps' count carefully and confirm with the host that beds (not just seats) match your group size for a comfortable Flint Hills trip.
travelks.com/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts in Augusta offer a wide range of helpful add-ons. Popular options include delivery and setup (often $1 to $3 per mile from the host's location), generator usage packages, propane fill, camp chairs and outdoor mats, bedding and kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, Wi-Fi hotspots, and even pre-stocked starter pantries. Each host sets their own pickup and drop-off times along with their own mileage policy, typically 100 to 150 miles per day, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer Kansas road trips. You'll see all available add-ons and policies clearly on the listing page before booking. Pro tip: if you're heading to El Dorado State Park, ask about a bundled delivery-plus-setup package, it usually costs less than booking pieces separately.
travelks.com/things-to-do/outdoors/How do payment and the security deposit work?
It's straightforward and secure. Payment for your Augusta RV rental is handled entirely through RVezy (never directly to the host), so you're protected end-to-end. You'll pay the rental total at booking, and a refundable security deposit is held separately a few days before your trip starts. The deposit amount is set on the listing and typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's size and value. As long as you return the RV clean, undamaged, with no extra mileage or generator hours beyond the policy, and on time, your deposit is released back to your card after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, it's the simplest way to make sure everything wraps up smoothly.
