Campgrounds near Baldwin City
Baldwin City sits in Douglas County in northeast Kansas, about a 20-minute drive south of Lawrence and roughly an hour southwest of downtown Kansas City. The surrounding area is a mix of rolling farmland, oak-hickory woodlands, and two large reservoirs, Clinton Lake and Hillsdale Lake, that anchor most of the region's developed camping. RV travelers using Baldwin City as a base typically choose between full-service private parks and Kansas state park campgrounds on the lakes.
The closest full-hookup option in town is Homewood RV Park and Campground. Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday sits just outside Lawrence and offers pull-through RV sites with 30 and 50-amp service, cabins, and family amenities. For lakeside camping, Campground 1 and Campground 3 at Clinton State Park sit near the north shore of Clinton Lake, and Scott Creek at Hillsdale State Park is situated on the western side of Hillsdale Lake, about 30 to 40 minutes east of town.
Between them, these sites cover everything from primitive tent pads to paved, big-rig-friendly pull-throughs with sewer.
Things to do near Baldwin City
In town, Baldwin City is home to Baker University, a walkable historic downtown, and the seasonal Midland Railway heritage train that departs from the Santa Fe Depot. The Maple Leaf Festival, held the third full weekend of October, draws large crowds for a parade, quilt show, 5K, kids' activities, and hundreds of craft and food booths in the historic downtown.
On the water, Clinton Lake and Hillsdale Lake both support boating, swimming beaches, and fishing for walleye, catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill. Clinton State Park offers a 25-mile hike and bike trail, a mountain-bike skills course, disc golf courses, a swim beach, and a trout pond. Hillsdale adds an equestrian trail network and strong bald eagle and waterfowl viewing in late fall and winter.

How to book
Kansas state park campgrounds, including both Clinton State Park and Scott Creek at Hillsdale State Park, are reserved through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks system on Reserve America. The reservation system operates through Reserve America with a minimum two-day advance booking requirement. Reservations for stays between October and March can only be made by contacting the Clinton park office weekdays.
A daily or annual Kansas state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee. Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday is booked directly through KOA, and Homewood RV Park and Campground handles bookings directly through the operator. For Maple Leaf Festival weekend and summer holidays, plan to book eight to twelve weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Clinton State Park offers a mix of primitive sites, water-and-electric sites with 30 and 20-amp service, sites with 50/30/20-amp service, and full-hookup sites with sewer, plus cabins. Scott Creek at Hillsdale features 60 campsites, all with water and electricity, along with a vault toilet but no shower house, so travelers wanting hot showers should factor that in.
Cell service can be patchy inside the state parks, particularly in more remote loops. Quiet hours are 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and generators cannot be used during quiet hours. Pets must be leashed, and fires are permitted only in designated rings. Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, partial shade from mature hardwoods, and mosquitoes near the water in mid-summer.
