Campgrounds and RV parks near Burlingame, KS

Burlingame's main street doubles as a historical site. Santa Fe Avenue measures about 130 feet across and was built wide enough to accommodate oxen teams making U-turns, reflecting the town's role as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The Burlingame Schuyler Museum, housed in a historic 1902 school building south of town, covers local, railroad, and trail history. Outdoor options center on Melvern Lake and Eisenhower State Park. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, bobwhite quail, squirrels, furbearers, and waterfowl, and anglers seek walleye, crappie, sauger, white bass, and channel catfish. Trails support horseback riding, biking, hiking, and archery, and Crooked Knee Horse Trail offers a 20-mile route through the undeveloped west side of the park. The Flint Hills Trail State Park, a 117-mile rails-to-trails system stretching from Osawatomie to Herington, passes near Burlingame and supports biking, hiking, and horseback riding.

The prime time to visit Eisenhower State Park is during spring and fall when the weather is mild. Summer offers full access to park amenities but can be hot and humid, and winters are quieter with some facilities limited. Spring brings the region's heaviest rainfall and the risk of severe thunderstorms, so RV travelers should watch forecasts closely from April through June. Summer draws the largest crowds at Melvern Lake and other reservoirs. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak season, and lakeside loops fill first. Holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book out earliest, and popular sites can be claimed weeks in advance. Fall offers cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and reliable weekend availability outside of hunting-season peaks. Winter camping is possible but limited: some loops close, water systems may be shut off to prevent freezing, and travelers should call ahead to confirm which sites remain open. Kansas state park campsites are reservable throughout the year, though on-site services scale back in the colder months.

Sites near Burlingame range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private parks to lakeside water-and-electric loops at Eisenhower State Park. Eisenhower provides 163 utility campsites: 126 with water and electric, 25 with water, electric, and sewer hookups, and five shower houses. Non-utility sites are available for primitive camping, and equestrian sites with electric and water are located in the Westpoint Campground loop. Some sites can be exposed to prairie wind, so plan accordingly. Urban-adjacent parks trade scenery for convenience. Travelers using Topeka-area RV parks should expect a mix of highway, rail, and industrial background noise typical of city-edge campgrounds. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Osage and Shawnee counties, though it can drop in low-lying areas around Melvern Lake.
