Camping near Burlington, Kansas
Burlington sits in Coffey County in east-central Kansas, on the Neosho River just below John Redmond Reservoir. The surrounding region blends tallgrass prairie, oak-hickory woodland, and reservoir shoreline, giving RV travelers a mix of open state park campgrounds, small state fishing lakes, and full-hookup private parks within easy driving distance.
Eisenhower State Park, on Melvern Lake north of Burlington, anchors the area's biggest reservation-based campground. It provides 163 utility campsites, with 126 water/electric sites, 25 water/electric/sewer sites, and five shower houses, plus non-utility primitive sites at Five-Star, Sailboat Beach, and Omaha Swim Beach. Farther south on Toronto Reservoir, Cross Timbers State Park offers shaded campsites with full and partial RV hookups plus primitive camping, with modern bathroom and shower facilities except at Mann's Cove Loop, which has a vault toilet.
For lower-key stays, Woodson State Fishing Lake and Woodson Cove - Cross Timbers State Park lean primitive, while Iola RV Park and Storage and Crossroads RV Park and Campground offer full hookups closer to town amenities.
Things to do around Burlington
Water recreation drives most trips. John Redmond Reservoir holds white crappie, white bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and various sunfish, and Toronto Reservoir at Cross Timbers offers similar species. Boat ramps, swim beaches, and shoreline fishing access are standard at the area reservoirs, and the Otter Creek area near John Redmond includes an off-road vehicle park.
On land, Eisenhower has a trail system for horseback riding, biking, hiking, and archery, including the 20-mile Crooked Knee Horse Trail through the undeveloped west side of the park. Cross Timbers has roughly 15 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails around Toronto Lake, including the interpretive Ancient Trees Trail, which is hiking-only.
Wildlife viewing is strong year-round, with white-tailed deer, wild turkey, quail, dove, and songbirds common across the surrounding wildlife areas.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. Spring brings mild temperatures but also the wettest stretch of the year and the highest severe-weather risk, so RVers should plan around thunderstorm outlooks and river levels below John Redmond Reservoir. Wildflowers, migrating waterfowl, and cooler shoulder-season fishing draw travelers before the summer crowds arrive.
Summer is peak booking season at reservoir parks. Sites near swim beaches and boat ramps go first on weekends and holidays, and afternoon heat indices routinely climb well into the upper nineties. Shaded loops and electric sites for air conditioning become priorities in July and August.
Fall brings cooler nights, better fishing, and lighter crowds. Winter camping is possible but many primitive loops and some shower buildings run on limited service, and Corps of Engineers sites at John Redmond typically shift to first-come, first-served outside the May through September peak season. Stays at Kansas state parks are limited to 14 consecutive days, which suits longer shoulder-season trips.
How to book campgrounds near Burlington
Kansas state parks, including Eisenhower and Cross Timbers, are reserved through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations open 364 days ahead and peak-season weekends fill quickly. A state park vehicle permit is required and can be purchased at the gate or added to the reservation.
Cross Timbers offers roughly 19 full-utility, 50 water/electric, and 8 electric-only reservable sites, plus a large primitive inventory that includes Mann's Cove and Woodson Cove loops. Woodson State Fishing Lake operates first-come, first-served with primitive sites.
John Redmond Reservoir Corps of Engineers campgrounds book through Recreation.gov during the peak May through September window and shift to first-come, first-served outside that season. Private parks such as Iola RV Park and Storage and Crossroads RV Park and Campground book directly with the operator, which is often the better route for last-minute summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is gently rolling prairie and oak woodland, and most established campgrounds are level and RV-accessible. Eisenhower's utility campsites include water/electric or water/electric/sewer hookups and are served by five shower houses, with Ike's General Store at Doud Campground selling ice, firewood, and basic supplies. Expect paved or well-graded gravel pads at reservoir loops and rougher gravel at fishing-lake sites.
Amenities scale down quickly outside the main state parks. Woodson State Fishing Lake sites are primitive with vault toilets and limited services, and Woodson Cove is similar. Reservoir shoreline loops can be exposed to steady prairie wind, so plan accordingly with tall RVs or awnings.
Cell coverage is generally usable near Burlington and along US-75 but drops in wooded reservoir loops. Bring water, firewood, and supplies before heading to the more remote fishing lakes.
