Campgrounds and RV parks near Carbondale, KS

Lake Shawnee is the anchor attraction. The county park includes a seven-mile paved path around the lake, disc golf, a heated fishing dock, a softball complex, a golf course, boat ramps, tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, an arboretum, and the Ted Ensley Gardens. The swim beach and boat rentals make it an easy day out for families staying at any of the area campgrounds. Topeka adds the Kansas Expocentre, the Topeka Zoo, the Combat Air Museum at Forbes Field, and the state capitol. West of Lawrence, Clinton State Park on the north shore of Clinton Lake offers channel catfish, walleye, and crappie fishing plus an extensive hiking and biking trail system through the adjacent wildlife area. Perry State Park and Pomona State Park provide additional reservoir fishing, boating, and hiking within an hour of town.

The prime camping window runs April through October. Reservations for Kansas State Park campsites during the prime season, April 1 through October 31, open at noon CST in mid-December for parks including Clinton, Eisenhower, Hillsdale, Perry, and Pomona, so weekend sites at the closest reservoirs can be booked out months ahead of Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Summer brings hot, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and Kansas's peak severe-weather season, with tornado risk highest in May and June. Spring is green and wet; fall is drier and often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with cool nights and steady leaf color into November. Winter camping is possible but limited. Kansas state parks are open year-round, though water is available only at camping areas with frost-free hydrants during winter. At Lake Shawnee, only sites 35 through 56 are open during off-season, and all Section A sites have 50-amp electric year-round while water hookups are available during on-season only.

Private parks in the corridor are straightforward, no-frills stops. Forbes Landing offers modern ADA-compliant bathrooms, level hard-surfaced pull-thru sites, sewer and water at every site, 30/50-amp electrical service, Wi-Fi, and a dump station, and campers should expect grain-elevator, train, and occasional aircraft noise from nearby Forbes Field. Mineral Springs is a similar full-hookup layout with a store, laundry, and pool. Lake Shawnee is a county park operation with concrete pads in the improved sections. Section B has concrete pads and full-service hookups including water, sewer, 50-amp and 30-amp electric, with sites B2 through B7 as pull-throughs, and sites can be stacked close together with limited privacy. A dump station and water fill station sit across the street from the campground entrance, free for campers with a current reservation and available for a fee to non-guests.
