Campgrounds and RV parks near Clay Center, KS

Milford Lake drives most of the recreation. The reservoir holds walleye, crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, and catfish, and multiple boat ramps ring the shoreline. Swim beaches, sand volleyball, and paddling are common at the private resorts, while state-park campgrounds add hiking trails and quieter shoreline access. The Milford Nature Center and Fish Hatchery, located within the park, is a family-friendly stop with exhibits and short walks. Wildlife viewing is straightforward around the park, with deer, turkeys, and a wide range of birds regularly seen in the rolling hills, prairies, and woodlands that surround the lake. Back in Clay Center, small-town restaurants and a walkable downtown work well for a rest-day break between lake outings.

The Clay Center area has a humid continental climate with strong seasonal swings. Summers are hot and often humid, with July highs typically near 90°F and afternoon thunderstorms possible. This is peak camping season at Milford Lake, and popular state-park loops fill well in advance around holiday weekends, which carry three- or four-night minimum stays. Spring brings the wettest months, with May typically the rainiest and averaging close to 15 rain days. Expect green landscapes, active fishing, and the chance of severe thunderstorms; a NOAA weather radio is a useful addition for camp. Fall cools quickly, with comfortable days into October, lighter crowds, and steady fishing. Winters are cold with regular snowfall from October into April. Flagstop Resort and RV Park closes its RV sites from November through March, while its cabins stay open year-round. State-park campgrounds generally scale back services in the off-season, so travelers should confirm loop status and utility availability before booking a cold-weather trip.

Milford State Park loops are RV-friendly, with a mix of electric-and-water sites, full-hookup pads, and primitive spots. Some back-in sites have hookups on the passenger side rather than the driver side, so longer cords and hoses can help. Terrain in the state park is uneven in places, which favors RVs over tent setups on sloped sites. Flagstop Resort and RV Park is a large gated campground with full-hookup and pull-through sites, a convenience store, swim beaches, a playground, and a seasonal on-site restaurant. It can feel busy on summer weekends. Cell coverage is generally usable around the lake but varies. Bring bug spray for evenings, a weather radio for spring and summer storms, and layers for cool nights outside of midsummer.
