Campgrounds near Cottonwood Falls
Cottonwood Falls sits in Chase County at the heart of the Kansas Flint Hills, the last major stretch of tallgrass prairie in North America. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers visiting Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, driving the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, and fishing Chase State Fishing Lake, all within a short drive of downtown.
RV options in and around town are limited but functional. Dunhams RV Park and Storage and Deer Grove RV Park (near El Dorado, roughly 45 minutes south) provide full-hookup sites suited to longer stays. Camp Wood YMCA, near Elmdale, is a private retreat center on hundreds of acres of Flint Hills terrain and hosts group and family programs rather than drive-up RV camping.
For lake access and a wider mix of hookup sites, most travelers head to El Dorado State Park, where Bluestem Point - El Dorado State Park and Walnut River Area - El Dorado State Park sit on the shoreline of the reservoir with beaches, trails, and boat ramps.
Things to do near Cottonwood Falls
The main draw is Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, about two miles north of Strong City on Kansas Highway 177. The preserve protects roughly 11,000 acres of tallgrass prairie, has more than 40 miles of hiking and nature trails, a resident bison herd in the Windmill Pasture, a visitor center, and 1880s ranch buildings including a limestone mansion and three-story barn.
In town, the Chase County Courthouse, one of the oldest working courthouses in Kansas, Swope Park, and the small shops and galleries along Broadway make an easy afternoon. Chase State Fishing Lake, west of town, has fishing access, a short waterfall hike at Chase Lake Falls, and shoreline paths.
For water recreation, El Dorado Reservoir offers boating, swimming beaches, and hiking and mountain-biking trails on the surrounding state park land.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window. May and June bring green prairie, wildflowers, and busy weekends around Flint Hills events; they are also among the wettest months, and thunderstorms can be heavy. Book well ahead for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day at El Dorado State Park.
Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging near the upper eighties Fahrenheit. Shade is limited on the prairie and at many lakeside sites, so RVers should plan on running A/C and hydrating on trails. Bison viewing at Tallgrass Prairie is best in the cooler morning hours.
Fall brings mild days, lower humidity, and thinner crowds, making it a strong choice for prairie hikes and scenic drives on the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway. Winter camping is possible at El Dorado's electric sites and at private RV parks, but expect cold nights, wind, and occasional snow or ice.
How to book a campground
El Dorado State Park sites and cabins, including those at Bluestem Point - El Dorado State Park and Walnut River Area - El Dorado State Park, are handled through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made online, by phone, or in person, and a Kansas state park vehicle permit is required for entry in addition to the campsite fee.
Private parks such as Dunhams RV Park and Storage and Deer Grove RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Camp Wood YMCA is booked through its office for programs and group stays, not as a public RV park. For holiday weekends, plan on booking state park sites several weeks to a few months in advance.
What to expect on-site
Expect open prairie, big skies, and limited tree cover at most lakeside sites. State park loops at El Dorado include a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and primitive sites, with wide, level pads suited to larger rigs, plus showers, dump stations, and playgrounds in the main areas.
Cell coverage is generally usable in and around Cottonwood Falls and at El Dorado, though it can drop inside Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Grocery and fuel options are basic in Cottonwood Falls and Strong City; El Dorado and Emporia have larger stores for restocking.
Wildlife encounters are common, including deer, wild turkey, and, at the preserve, free-roaming bison. Keep a safe distance from bison (at least 125 yards per park guidance), secure food, and watch for ticks and chiggers in tall grass from spring through early fall.
