Campgrounds near Herington, Kansas
Herington sits in the southern part of Dickinson County in north-central Kansas, at the edge of the Flint Hills and near the Chase County tallgrass prairie. The city is the hub of the Tri-County area for Dickinson, Morris, and Marion Counties. RV travelers use it as a low-traffic base for exploring central Kansas, with easy access from US-77 and US-56.
Camping options range from full-hookup private RV parks to city-run sites at the local lake. Owls Nest Campground and Golden Wheat Budget Host and RV Park serve travelers who want short-stay hookups close to town. Smoky Hill RV Park and Chapman Creek RV Park sit within a short drive north along the I-70 corridor, while Camp Wood YMCA offers a rustic group-style setting in the Flint Hills to the south.
The Herington Lake and Reservoir are located just one mile west of the city and offer electric pedestals for RV camping, swimming areas, and fishing for white and largemouth bass, walleye, catfish, and crappie. The mix suits families planning a multi-stop Kansas loop.
Things to do near Herington
Fishing and paddling anchor most trips. Both the lake and reservoir provide a diverse fishery, with crappie and channel catfish stocked annually, and public hunting for migratory wildfowl is allowed at the Herington Reservoir. Motorized boats must be inspected before launching on the lake or reservoir.
In town, Father Padilla Memorial Park has shaded picnic areas, a playground, tennis and basketball courts, and a nine-hole disc golf course. The park sits adjacent to the Herington terminus of the Flint Hills Trail, a long rail-trail popular with cyclists and walkers. Day trips reach the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City, and Council Grove on the Santa Fe Trail. Anglers and families looking for a quieter afternoon can rotate between the two city lakes just west of town.

Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. May through early June brings green prairie, wildflowers, and active fishing, but it is also the peak of severe thunderstorm season across central Kansas, with hail and tornado risk. Travelers should watch NWS Topeka forecasts and choose sites with sturdy hookups.
Summer runs hot and humid. July is the warmest month in Herington, with average highs near 90°F and lows near 70°F. Heat indices frequently push higher, so shaded sites and electric hookups for air conditioning matter. July and August are the busiest months at the city lake and reservoir.
Fall cools quickly through September and October, with clear days and lower storm risk, making it a strong shoulder season. A seasonal camp host is on-site at the city lake from April through the end of the camping season, so services taper after that. Winter is cold and windy, and many amenities scale back, though hardy travelers can still find open sites.
How to book campgrounds near Herington
Private parks in and around Herington, including Owls Nest Campground, Golden Wheat Budget Host and RV Park, Smoky Hill RV Park, and Chapman Creek RV Park, typically take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Calling ahead is the most reliable approach for weekends and holidays, since inventory is small.
For the city-run sites, online camping registration is available through the City of Herington using a Firefly Reservations portal. Filters on the reservation portal include back-in, big rig, electric, and cable TV hookup options. Daily camping fees apply, with an added charge per day for electricity, and an annual pass is also offered. Camp Wood YMCA handles group and individual bookings directly through the YMCA. Reserve summer weekends several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small-town pace and open prairie. Sites near Herington Lake are generally level with electric pedestals and lake access, but shade varies by loop and some spots are open to strong Kansas wind. Cell service is workable in town and along the highways, and drops in and out at the reservoir.
Wildlife is common: white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and waterfowl. Anglers should carry a Kansas fishing license, and boaters should plan for the aquatic-nuisance-species inspection before launching. Ticks and chiggers are active from late spring through early fall.
Groceries, fuel, and hardware are available in Herington itself, with larger stores in Abilene and Junction City. Overnight temperatures can swing widely between seasons, so pack layers even in summer, and watch weather radios during storm season.
