Campgrounds and RV parks near Hillsboro, KS

Hillsboro sits in Marion County in central Kansas, a short drive from Marion Reservoir, the main draw for RV travelers in the area. Completed in 1968, Marion Reservoir encompasses 6,200 acres of water surrounded by another 6,000 acres of public lands, located just north of U.S. Highway 56 between the communities of Marion and Hillsboro, Kansas. The reservoir includes 253 campsites located in four parks: Cottonwood Point, Hillsboro Cove, Marion Cove, and French Creek Cove. All four are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and booked through Recreation.gov. Private options fill in around the lake and along the U.S. 56 corridor, including Cottonwood Grove RV Campground, Battlehill RV Park, and Payne Oil RV Park. Travelers heading west toward I-135 will also find Mcpherson RV Ranch And Horse Motel, which suits rigs traveling with horses. The landscape here is transitional prairie: rolling farmland, scattered woodlots, and reservoir shoreline. Expect open sites with limited natural shade at many locations, and full hookups mainly at private parks rather than Corps campgrounds.

Corps of Engineers sites at Marion Reservoir are reserved through Recreation.gov. Recreation.gov reservations open on a rolling basis, exactly 6 months in advance at 10:00 AM Eastern Time, so reservations for July 15 open on January 15 at 10:00 AM ET. For peak summer weekends, plan to book at the top of the window. Marion Cove, the primitive area, operates on self-registration for walk-in campers when sites are open. Private parks such as Cottonwood Grove RV Campground, Battlehill RV Park, and Payne Oil RV Park handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For longer stays or larger rigs, call ahead to confirm site length, hookup type, and pull-through availability.
