Campgrounds and RV parks near Hoyt, KS

Perry Reservoir anchors most outdoor activity in the area. Boating, sailing, water skiing, and swimming are common in summer, and the lake is well known regionally for crappie and channel catfish. Perry State Park has about 20 miles of hiking and biking trails and 25 miles of equestrian trails winding through upland forest, and the adjacent Perry Lake Trail is a National Recreation Trail running roughly 29 miles along the wooded west side of the lake. Lake Shawnee, on the southeast side of Topeka, adds a golf course, marina, tennis courts, ball diamonds, and a paved trail that circles the water for about 7 miles. Registered campers at Lake Shawnee Campground get access to a natural swim cove during the on-season. In town, Topeka offers the Kansas State Capitol, the Evel Knievel Museum, the Topeka Zoo in Gage Park, and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park.

The main camping season in northeast Kansas runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. At Perry State Park, utility sites with water and electric are reservable April 1 through October 31, while primitive camping is available year-round. Lake Shawnee Campground accepts phone reservations for arrivals between May 15 and September 15, with a three-night minimum on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. Late spring is the wettest stretch, with May typically the rainiest month and a real chance of severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes across the region. Summer brings hot, humid days with highs near 90°F and regular afternoon storms, plus peak demand on holiday weekends. Early fall is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel: warm days, cool nights, lower humidity, and fewer bugs. Winters are cold with periodic snow and ice, and water systems and bathhouses at Perry State Park are shut down during the winter months, so off-season campers should bring their own water.

Sites at Prairie Band Casino Resort RV Park are set on open ground with 30 and 50 amp service and access to the adjacent casino, restaurants, and convenience store. Lake Shawnee Campground has around 150 sites with 50-amp electric service; Section B offers full hookups with water, sewer, and concrete pads during the on-season, and some Section B sites are pull-throughs. Perry State Park is more traditional: utility loops such as Lakeview, Cougar Pass, and Cottonwood Bridge for RVs, primitive areas for tents, wooded terrain, and shower houses in most areas. Cell coverage is reliable near Hoyt, Mayetta, and Topeka, but can be spotty in the more remote loops at Perry. Summer visitors should plan for heat, humidity, ticks, chiggers, and the possibility of severe weather.
