Campgrounds and RV parks near McLouth, KS

Water recreation dominates the region. Perry Reservoir covers roughly 11,000 acres with about 160 miles of shoreline and is well known for channel catfish fishing. Clinton Lake, closer to Lawrence, supports boating, swimming beaches, and paddle sports, with marinas on both lakes. On land, Perry State Park maintains an extensive trail network used for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use through upland forest, with roughly 25 miles of horse trails and 20 miles of biking and hiking trails. Clinton State Park offers additional singletrack popular with mountain bikers. Day trips are easy. Downtown Lawrence provides restaurants, the University of Kansas campus, and museums, while Topeka adds the Kansas State Capitol and the Combat Air Museum. Kansas City is within about an hour, giving families access to zoos, sports venues, and larger attractions on rest days from camp.

Northeast Kansas has a humid continental climate with hot, wet summers and cold, drier winters. Late spring is the wettest window, with May typically bringing the heaviest rainfall of the year, and severe thunderstorms are common from April through June. RV travelers should plan for muddy access roads and possible lake-level fluctuations during this period. Summer is the peak camping season. Sites at Perry State Park and Clinton State Park fill quickly around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends, and Kansas state parks impose minimum-stay requirements on those holidays: a four-night minimum for Memorial Day and three-night minimums for the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, though Labor Day can move to four nights in some seasons. Fall brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and reduced crowds through October, making it a strong shoulder season. Winter camping is possible but limited: many loops close or reduce services, freezing temperatures affect water hookups, and snow events are periodic.

Sites near McLouth range from full-hookup RV resort spurs at the KOA to a mix of electric, electric-and-water, and primitive sites at the state parks. Kansas state parks use a color-coded post system at each site: green for primitive, yellow for electric only, blue for electric and water, and white for electric, water, and sewer. Perry and Clinton loops include access to showerhouses and dump stations. Cell service is generally reliable near Lawrence and Topeka but can drop off in wooded park interiors. Firewood restrictions apply at many parks to limit invasive pests. Wildlife encounters typically involve deer, wild turkey, and shoreline waterbirds. Ticks and chiggers are common from late spring through early fall, so bug protection is important for families with kids running trails or shoreline.
