Campgrounds and RV parks near Mission, KS

The metro side of a Mission trip is the main draw. Kansas City attractions within a short drive include the Kansas City Zoo, the Hallmark Visitors Center, Shawnee Town open-air museum, and pro sports at Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums. Families staying at Worlds Of Fun Village have a dedicated entrance to the Worlds of Fun theme park and the Oceans of Fun waterpark next door. Outdoor recreation clusters around the region's lakes. Longview Lake, Smithville Lake, Lake Jacomo, and Blue Springs Lake all sit within about an hour and offer boating, fishing, swimming beaches, and paved or natural trails. Weston Bend State Park, about forty minutes northwest, adds Missouri River overlooks and hiking, and Hillsdale State Park south of the metro adds equestrian trails and a large reservoir.

The Kansas City area has a humid continental climate with a very large seasonal temperature contrast. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold with regular snowfall, and precipitation is spread through the year but heavier in the warm months. May is typically the wettest month, and July is the hottest. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Mid-April through mid-May and mid-September through mid-October bring milder temperatures and lower humidity, though spring also carries the region's severe-thunderstorm and tornado risk. Summer afternoons commonly produce thunderstorms, and humidity frequently exceeds 80 percent in July and August. Many metro-area RV parks, including Walnut Grove RV Park, operate year round, while amusement-park-affiliated properties follow a shorter season. Worlds Of Fun Village generally operates from March through November, tracking the amusement park calendar that runs from early spring into late fall. Winter stays are possible in the metro but expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced on-site amenities such as seasonal pools.

Metro RV parks around Mission are compact, urban-adjacent properties rather than wilderness sites. Walnut Grove sits in a residential neighborhood off I-35 with gravel sites, full hookups, a laundromat, restrooms with showers, a small dog area, and a general store. Sites are close together, and the trade-off is proximity to downtown attractions rather than seclusion. Resort-style properties feel different. Worlds Of Fun Village offers concrete pads, full hookups with cable, a seasonal pool and hot tub, an arcade, and cabin and cottage rentals alongside 82 RV sites. Basswood Resort spreads full-hookup sites across a wooded property with fishing lakes, a seasonal swimming pool, walking trails, and weekend activities, though guests should be aware of aircraft noise from nearby Kansas City International Airport.
