Campgrounds near Waverly, Kansas
Waverly sits in Coffey County in east-central Kansas, roughly halfway between Emporia and Ottawa on U.S. 75. The town has a small number of private RV parks in the immediate area, but most RV travellers base out of the two large state park reservoirs to the north.
Eisenhower State Park occupies 1,785 acres on Melvern Lake, with a mix of tallgrass prairie, woodland, and a swimming beach on the shore of the 6,900-acre reservoir. The park lies about 30 miles northeast of Emporia and 35 miles south of Topeka, and offers utility campsites, primitive areas, cabins, and yurts. Pomona State Park is located in Osage County on the south shore of Pomona Lake and offers camping, boating, fishing, and hiking, with multiple campground loops spread along the shoreline and a full-service marina.
Closer to Waverly itself, Crossroads RV Park and Campground near Lyndon provides pull-through hookups, cabins, and a storm shelter. Homewood RV Park and the related Homewood RV Park and Campground round out the private options, providing a base for travellers who prefer smaller, quieter properties over the busier lakeside state park loops.
Things to do near Waverly
Water recreation drives most trips to this area. Melvern Lake is a spot to fish for bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, white crappie, walleye, and sauger, and wildlife in the surrounding area includes white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, bobwhite quail, squirrels, furbearers, and waterfowl. The Pomona Lake Marina provides full services to water enthusiasts, anglers, and campers, and four boat ramps provide access to the lake's generally calm waters.
On land, Pomona State Park has hiking trails, a swim beach, and shaded picnic areas. Eisenhower is home to a burgeoning trails system for horseback riding, biking, hiking and archery, and the Crooked Knee Horse Trail offers equestrians a 20-mile excursion through the undeveloped west side of the park. Pomona State Park is near the 117-mile Flint Hills Trail, which is popular with cyclists and horseback riders.

Summer opens full access to swim beaches, marinas, and rentals, but temperatures regularly climb into the upper 80s and humidity is high through July and August. Winter is quiet, with some facilities scaled back, though the four ADA accessible modern cabins at Pomona State Park are available for reservation year-round.
Severe weather is a real planning factor. Kansas sits in the heart of Tornado Alley, and activity is most common between April and June, with May typically the peak month. Coffey County uses outdoor warning sirens during severe weather events, and campers should identify shelter locations on arrival. Crossroads RV Park and Campground maintains an on-site storm shelter for guests.
Bald eagles winter along Pomona Lake and are often seen perching in shoreline trees or soaring above the water, giving cold-weather visitors a distinct wildlife draw.
Booking and reservations
Eisenhower and Pomona State Parks both take reservations through ReserveAmerica. Reservations may be made up to 364 days in advance, and Kansas state park camping reservations open in mid-December for the entirety of the upcoming year. Peak-season weekends fill quickly, and popular loops can sell out months ahead, so early booking is strongly recommended.
Camping permits do not cover additional daily utility fees or prime site fees, and valid state park vehicle permits are also required. All campers are limited to 14 consecutive days and a five-day absence is required before returning to the park to camp again.
Private parks such as Crossroads RV Park and Campground, Homewood RV Park, and Homewood RV Park and Campground handle bookings directly through the operators. Contact each park for current availability before arrival.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Eisenhower State Park provides 163 utility campsites: 126 with water/electric, 25 with water/electric/sewer hookups and five shower houses. Non-utility sites are available for primitive camping in Five-Star, Sailboat Beach, and Omaha Swim Beach. The park offers 4 modern cabins and 2 primitive yurts for rent. Wind off the lake is common, and some sites are near active train tracks.
Pomona State Park offers a mix of water/electric and primitive sites plus four ADA-accessible modern cabins that provide many modern conveniences including a bedroom, kitchen, restroom with shower, heating and air conditioning. Utensils, dishware, and coffee pots are not provided in cabins, so guests should pack their own.
Crossroads RV Park and Campground provides pull-through and back-in sites, cabin rentals, showers, laundry, and a storm shelter. Expect open prairie exposure, warm summer humidity, and generally reliable cell coverage across the region.
