Campgrounds and RV parks near Yates Center, KS

Fishing anchors most trips. Toronto Reservoir holds white crappie, white bass, channel catfish, and flathead catfish, and Fall River Reservoir supports similar species plus black bass and bluegill. Woodson State Fishing Lake offers quiet bank access for typical Kansas panfish and catfish. Cross Timbers State Park has six hiking and mountain-biking trails ranging from short loops to routes several miles long, including the foot-only Ancient Trees Trail through old post oaks. Fall River State Park adds another six trails, most concentrated in the Quarry Bay area, plus canoeing on the Fall River itself. Wildlife viewing is strong in the surrounding wildlife areas, with deer, turkey, quail, waterfowl, and greater prairie chicken. Swim beaches, boat ramps, and playgrounds are available at both reservoirs for families traveling with kids.

Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. May brings pleasant highs in the mid-70s and greening prairie, though it is also part of the wettest stretch, with thunderstorms and occasional severe weather. September and October cool down quickly and see less rain, making them popular months for anglers and hikers. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs in the low 90s and warm overnight lows. Reservoirs draw heavy boating traffic on holiday weekends, and sites at Woodson Cove, Quarry Bay, and Wind Hill fill well in advance. Reservations at Kansas state parks can be made up to 364 days ahead, so summer bookings should be locked in early. Winter is short but genuinely cold, with hard freezes and occasional snow. Cross Timbers reduces services in the off season: shower houses close, and water is shut off in several loops, though a limited number of utility sites and cabins remain open year-round. Quarry Bay shower buildings and water supply also close in winter.

State park campgrounds around Yates Center are rustic but well maintained. At Cross Timbers, most loops have modern restrooms and showers in season, with vault toilets available year-round. Full-hookup sites are limited, so travelers needing sewer should book those specific loops early. Fall River is more remote. The park is managed out of the Cross Timbers office, so only gatehouse and maintenance staff are typically on site. Quarry Bay sits across the dam from the main park, with utility sites fitting rigs up to about 30 feet and covered shelters at several sites. Woodson State Fishing Lake is bare-bones: gravel and dirt access, vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, with no site water or hookups. Cell coverage is spotty across the region, so download maps before leaving town.
