Campgrounds near Ashland, Kentucky
Ashland sits at the tri-state corner where Kentucky meets Ohio and West Virginia, on the south bank of the Ohio River. RV travelers use it as a base for the Appalachian foothills, the Country Music Highway corridor, and day trips into Huntington, West Virginia. Interstate 64 runs just south of town, which puts most nearby campgrounds within a short drive of full-service exits.
The closest full-hookup option is Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday in Argillite, less than a mile off I-64. Public camping centers on Greenbo Lake State Resort Park in Greenup County, a Kentucky State Parks property with a lakeside campground, lodge, and marina. Smaller privately run parks fill out the area, including Little Bear Island Campground along the Little Sandy River, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and The Falls Campground in Fallsburg on Blaine Creek.
Collectively these five sites cover the range most RV renters need: pull-throughs for big rigs, waterfront tent and trailer sites, and state-park loops with electric or full hookups.
Things to do near Ashland
Water recreation drives much of the trip planning here. Greenbo Lake covers roughly 225 acres and supports fishing, paddling, and boating from the park marina, plus a lakeside community pool with a waterslide during the summer season. The Little Sandy River and Blaine Creek offer wadeable, family-friendly spots near Little Bear Island Campground and The Falls Campground.
On land, Greenbo Lake State Resort Park has marked hiking trails through Appalachian hardwood forest around the lake. Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday get miniature golf, two children's playgrounds, sand volleyball, a large swimming pool, and a stocked fishing pond on site.
Off-site, Ashland's downtown riverfront and the museums and arts venues across the river in Huntington round out rainy-day plans.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in northeastern Kentucky. April through early June brings mild temperatures, high water in the creeks, and open shoulder-season availability at most campgrounds. Fall color typically peaks in mid to late October across the Appalachian foothills, and October weekends fill quickly at parks that host Halloween events.
Summer runs warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. This is peak season for Greenbo Lake State Resort Park and Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, so weekends and holidays should be booked well in advance. The community pool at Greenbo generally opens Memorial Day weekend and runs through late August, with weekend-only operation into early September.
Winter is the quiet season. Kentucky State Parks warns that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so RV renters traveling from December through February should call ahead to confirm hookups. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday operates year-round.
How to book campgrounds near Ashland
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is reserved through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, online or by phone. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. Sites vary widely in length and hookup type, so read the site details carefully when booking a larger rig.
Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday takes bookings through the KOA website or by calling the property directly. Confirm the current booking channel before arrival.
Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and The Falls Campground are independently operated and typically book by phone or through the operator's own website. Big-rig drivers headed to The Falls Campground should confirm the recommended approach with the campground, as some local roads have tight turns.
What to expect on site
Site types vary widely across the five closest campgrounds. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday offers full-hookup, slide-out friendly, big-rig pull-through sites with 20/30/50 amp service, cable, and free Wi-Fi, plus deluxe cabins with private full baths. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park has 103 sites in total: 43 full-service (including 16 full-service pull-throughs and 4 equestrian sites), 36 standard electric sites, and 24 primitive sites, plus three dump stations and two central bathhouses.
Little Bear Island Campground sits along the Little Sandy River with a mix of shaded, grassy sites and river access; some sites offer electric and water. Expect Eastern Time throughout the area, leashed-pet policies at state park sites, and cell coverage that thins out quickly once trips move into the surrounding hollows.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ashland%2C%20KentuckyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ashland, KY?

Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every RV on the RVezy platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the booking platform so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters in Boyd County are surprised how straightforward the process is.

Every booking through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can enjoy your Ashland RV trip with real peace of mind. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at checkout, especially if you are planning longer routes into the Appalachian foothills.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy for an Ashland, KY RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Ashland is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, which gives you breathing room to confirm work schedules, weather forecasts, or family plans before fully committing. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far in advance you cancel, and host cancellations result in a full refund or travel credit to the guest. For full details on the current policy, review the RVezy Help Center before booking. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for Poage Landing Days in September, then refine logistics later.

Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Ashland, KY welcome four-legged co-pilots. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see listings that allow dogs and other pets, and message the host beforehand to confirm any size or breed notes. Once you are on the road, your pup will enjoy the leashed trails around Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, where pets are welcome in the campground, and the trails at Carter Caves State Resort Park, which also allows leashed dogs on most hiking paths. Central Park in Ashland is a great in-town stop for a leashed walk. Pro tip: pack a tie-out stake and a collapsible water bowl for those humid Ohio River afternoons.
parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/greenbo-lakeCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Ashland, KY?
Yes, RV delivery in Ashland is one of the most popular options for first-time renters, especially if you would rather not drive a motorhome through downtown or over the Ohio River bridges. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your rental directly at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, Yatesville Lake State Park, or even a friend's driveway in Boyd County for a flat fee, typically based on distance. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it, then message them with your destination for a custom quote. They will level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through everything, so you can focus on enjoying your trip from minute one.
parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/greenbo-lakeHow does mileage work on an Ashland, KY RV rental?
Most Ashland RV rentals come with a daily mileage allowance, typically between 100 and 150 free miles per day, with additional miles available at a per-mile rate set by the host. For local trips, this is usually plenty. Greenbo Lake is about 17 miles away, Carter Caves State Resort Park is roughly 35 miles, and Yatesville Lake sits about 30 miles south. Planning a bigger loop into West Virginia or the Hocking Hills in Ohio? Look for listings that offer unlimited mileage or higher daily allowances. Pro tip: message the host with your planned route before booking to arrange a mileage package that fits your itinerary, which often works out cheaper than paying overage fees.

Spring brings dogwoods and redbuds blooming across the Appalachian foothills with daytime highs typically in the 70s, while fall delivers orange and red foliage along the Ohio River. Summer highs often reach the upper 80s with high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so an RV with strong air conditioning is helpful in July and August. Winter rentals are possible, but most state park campgrounds shut off water hookups during freezing months. Pro tip: time your visit to Poage Landing Days in mid-September for a festival weekend with typically pleasant camping weather.

Save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup. Pro tip: cell service can be spotty in the hollows around Greenup County, so download offline maps before you leave Ashland.

Budgeting fuel is straightforward once you know your rig. Class C motorhomes typically average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer usually pulls 10 to 13 MPG. Kentucky gas prices generally run slightly below the national average, and you will find competitive fuel at the Pilot Travel Center on US-23 and the Sheetz locations along the Ohio River. For a typical 3-night Ashland RV trip with 200 miles of driving, budget roughly $80 to $120 in fuel for a Class C. parks.ky.gov/What are local driving conditions like for RVs in Ashland, KY?
Driving an RV around Ashland is manageable for most renters, with US-23 and the AA Highway (KY-9) offering wide lanes and gentle grades that suit larger motorhomes. The Ohio River bridges connecting to Ironton and Coal Grove, Ohio have height clearances comfortable for standard RVs under 13 feet 6 inches. Watch for narrow, winding county roads in the hollows around Greenup and Carter counties, where two-lane roads can have tight curves and steep drops. Spring brings occasional flooding along the Ohio River, and winter can produce ice on bridge decks. Pro tip: avoid downtown Ashland's older streets near 13th and Winchester during festivals and use the bypass instead, especially in a Class A.

You pay with a credit or debit card at booking, and the security deposit is held separately as a temporary authorization on your card before pickup, with amounts typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. The hold is released after the trip assuming no damage, excess mileage, or missing add-ons. To avoid issues, complete the pre-trip walkthrough carefully and document the RV's condition with photos. Pro tip: return the rig clean and with fuel and propane at the same levels as pickup to get your full deposit back quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take an RV from Ashland into West Virginia or Ohio?
Yes, Ashland's location at the Tri-State border makes cross-border RV trips one of the area's biggest perks, and your RVezy rental covers travel throughout the United States. Huntington, West Virginia is about 15 miles east, Portsmouth, Ohio is roughly 45 miles northwest along US-52, and New River Gorge National Park is a scenic 90-mile drive into West Virginia. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. If you are considering a longer trip into Canada, message the host directly before booking to confirm. Pro tip: the Country Music Highway (US-23) south from Ashland is a stunning Appalachian route through the home regions of Loretta Lynn and Billy Ray Cyrus.
