Campgrounds and RV parks near Cannonsburg, KY

Water recreation drives most trips in this corner of Kentucky. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park offers a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide, hiking in the forest around the lake, and a fieldstone lodge, plus a marina and stocked fishing. Greenbo Lake is a 225 acre lake known for its bass fishing, holding the 2nd and 3rd state records, and the lake holds bluegill, crappie, and catfish and is stocked annually with 17,000 trout. The park also has miles of hiking trails through the surrounding forest. Families staying at The Falls Campground get creekside access along Blaine Creek, while Little Bear Island Campground offers fishing, hiking, and campfires by the Little Sandy River. Off-site, day trips reach downtown Ashland, the Country Music Highway corridor, and Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve near Greenup.

The Cannonsburg area has a four-season climate with a clear camping window from spring through fall. State-park camping at Greenbo Lake is typically open from early spring through late fall, and Little Bear Island Campground runs a similar warm-season schedule, generally opening around April. Ashland Huntington West KOA operates year-round with full-service RV sites, cabins, and tent camping, and Creekside Cabins and RV Park also caters to shoulder-season and winter travelers. Spring brings the wettest stretch and higher creek and river levels, which is worth noting for creekside sites at The Falls Campground and Little Bear Island. Summer is peak season for lake and river recreation, with warm humid days and busy weekends around major holidays. Fall offers cooler nights and hardwood color across the Appalachian foothills of eastern Kentucky. Winter camping is limited at public campgrounds. Kentucky State Parks notes that during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, water and other campground resources cannot be guaranteed, and campers should contact the park directly before arrival.

Access roads in this part of eastern Kentucky are narrow and winding in places. Approaching The Falls Campground, reviewers advise checking the route in, as some connecting state routes are narrow and curvy and larger Class A or C rigs should plan the approach carefully. Little Bear Island Campground is accessible by boat or a dirt road that can become muddy during wet conditions. Hookups vary by park. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday offers water, electric, 50-amp, sewer, Wi-Fi, and a pool. Greenbo Lake has a campground with electric and water hookups suitable for tents and RVs, plus restrooms, showers, laundry, and a dump station. Little Bear Island sites feature 30/50-amp electric and city water with an onsite dump station. Cell service is patchy in the hollows and around the lakes. Download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving the main highway, and bring leveling blocks: several parks in the area sit on sloped or riverside terrain.
