Campgrounds and RV parks near Grayson, KY

The main draw is Carter Caves State Resort Park. Cascade Cave features a 30-foot underground waterfall, and X Cave shows off stone arches, spirals, and pipes, with guided tours held daily throughout the year. More than 30 miles of trails wind through the surrounding woodlands for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and the park also offers a rock climbing and rappelling area, an 18-hole miniature golf course, and the 45-acre Smoky Lake, where visitors can fish, boat, or rent a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. At Greenbo Lake, families fish, swim, and paddle the 225-acre lake, and a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide is a popular summer draw. Nearby Grayson Lake State Park adds a second reservoir for boating and shoreline hiking.

Late spring through mid-fall is the practical RV window. Kentucky State Parks note that due to weather, water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so campers should contact the park directly for available resources when traveling during freezing months. At Greenbo, the 18-hole miniature golf course in the camping area is open April through October. Summer weekends and holidays fill fast, and reservations well in advance are advised at Carter Caves during peak periods. Fall brings hardwood color across the ridges and cooler nights that suit hiking and cave tours. Bird-watchers are in their element in winter and early spring, while cave tours are held daily throughout the year. Carter Caves Campground stays open year-round, and Greenbo Lake is also listed as open year-round on the state reservation system, though services taper in the colder months. Burn bans may be in effect during dry stretches, so check park alerts before arrival.

State park campgrounds in this region are developed but rustic. At Greenbo Lake, the campground offers a mix of primitive, electric-only, and full-service sites, along with three dump stations, central service buildings with showers and restrooms, and a grocery store. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings, and can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet, though some have steep grades that are not ideal for larger rigs. Carter Caves offers a similar mix. Sites accommodate tents and RVs, with a handful of full-hookup and pull-through sites. Unless noted by a specific site alert, water and electric hookups are within 25 feet of the site. Terrain is wooded and hilly, and some sites need extra hose and cord length. Household rules are consistent across Kentucky State Parks. Sites can hold up to eight occupants, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate. The maximum is two units per site: one camper plus one tent, or two tents if no camper. Golf carts require a permit purchased at check-in, and annual permits work at all Kentucky State Park campgrounds and the Kentucky Horse Park.
