Camping near Louisa, Kentucky
Louisa sits in Lawrence County in eastern Kentucky, at the confluence of the Levisa and Tug forks of the Big Sandy River, along the Kentucky-West Virginia border. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the northern edge of the Appalachian foothills, with access to lake recreation, state park systems in two states, and the wider Tri-State region around Huntington and Ashland.
The closest state-park option is Yatesville Lake State Park, built around a reservoir of roughly 2,200 acres on Blaine Creek that is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The park lies about 30 miles south of Huntington, West Virginia, and is reached from U.S. Route 23, which keeps arrivals straightforward for larger rigs.
Other options in the surrounding drive time include Creekside Cabins and RV Park, The Falls Campground, Beech Fork State Park across the state line in West Virginia, and the Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday in Argillite. Together these give travelers a mix of state-park lakefront sites, private full-hookup parks, and interstate-adjacent stopovers.
Things to do around Louisa
Water recreation drives most trips. Yatesville Lake supports boating, fishing, and swimming, with a marina that offers boat access and kayak or canoe access-only campsites along the shoreline. The lake is known locally for bass, bluegill, and crappie fishing. An 18-hole golf course, Eagle Ridge, sits within the state park on mountainous terrain and is part of the Kentucky State Park signature series.
Across the state line, Beech Fork State Park centers on a 720-acre lake with 31 miles of shoreline, hiking trails, a swimming pool complex, and paddle craft rentals. The park sits about 12 miles from Huntington and Barboursville. Day trips from Louisa also reach Ashland's downtown, Carter Caves State Resort Park west of Grayson, and the Huntington waterfront.

The core RV season in this region runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Yatesville Lake State Park operates as a Kentucky State Parks facility, and the agency notes that water and other resources at its campgrounds cannot be guaranteed during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers arriving in shoulder or winter months should contact the park before booking a hookup site.
At Beech Fork State Park, Old Orchard Campground is open year-round, while Four Coves, Moxley Branch, and Lake View operate seasonally, generally opening in spring and closing in mid to late fall. Fall color across the Appalachian foothills typically peaks in mid to late October and drives strong weekend demand at both state parks.
Summers are warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and July is typically the wettest month. Winters bring cold snaps and occasional snow, and many private amenities such as pools and mini-golf close for the off-season even at parks that remain open.
How to book campsites near Louisa
Yatesville Lake State Park reservations run through the Kentucky State Parks system, online or by phone, and can be made up to 12 months in advance with a minimum of one day ahead of arrival. Sites can be occupied by a maximum of eight people, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate. Some sites may be held at the campground for first-come, first-served arrivals.
Beech Fork State Park uses the West Virginia State Parks reservation platform, online, by phone, or at the campground office. Weekend stays require a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday, weekday stays require only one night, and the maximum stay is 14 nights. Lakefront sites fill first, so book early for summer weekends.
Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday currently takes reservations by phone directly with the campground rather than through the KOA online system. Creekside Cabins and RV Park and The Falls Campground book through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on site
Yatesville Lake State Park offers a mix of Class A sites with electric and water hookups, primitive tent sites, and paddle-in campsites accessible only by kayak or canoe. Restrooms with showers, a dump station, and a marina are on site. Cell coverage in the surrounding hollows can be spotty, and GPS routing sometimes suggests indirect approaches, so following signed park directions from U.S. 23 is advised for larger RVs.
Beech Fork State Park has 275 campsites in four camping areas, of which 99 are lakefront. All sites have a paved parking pad, picnic table, and grill, and each loop has a bathhouse. Wi-Fi is limited to the park headquarters and Old Orchard Campground.
Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday offers full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, pull-throughs suitable for big rigs, a pool, mini-golf, and cable at each site. The property sits less than a mile from Interstate 64.
