Campgrounds and RV parks near South Shore, KY

Shawnee State Park anchors most outdoor plans. Activities include fishing, swimming, hiking, and boating on Roosevelt Lake and Turkey Creek Lake, and the Shawnee Backpack Trail offers a 40-mile main loop through the state forest, with a 23-mile North Loop and a 17-mile South Loop for shorter treks. Two well-stocked lakes hold largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, and trout, and a valid Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Boaters can launch on the Ohio River from the state park marina area on US 52. The Black Bear Disc Golf Course sits near Turkey Creek Lake, and several shorter nature trails, including the Turkey Creek Nature Center Trail, offer easy walks. On the Kentucky side, day trips reach Greenbo Lake State Resort Park for lake fishing and the adjoining Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve.

The camping calendar around South Shore splits between year-round private parks and seasonal public sites. Shawnee State Park operates its two campgrounds through the main season, with the campground dump station running without water from November 1 to April 1 in the off-peak stretch. Several private campgrounds along the Ohio River remain open year-round. Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day and on fall color weekends in October. Spring brings warming temperatures, migratory birds, and higher river levels. Summer is the busiest stretch, and many sites require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends and holidays. Fall delivers cooler nights and hardwood color across the Shawnee hills, and sites stay busy through mid-October. Winter camping is limited to private year-round parks. Snow is intermittent rather than deep, but freezing nights are common from December through February, so travelers should plan for cold-weather hookups and confirm whether water service is winterized at their chosen park.

Terrain in the region is a mix of river flats and forested ridges. Sites range from relatively flat riverside locations to more hilly settings at Shawnee State Park, which can affect leveling for larger rigs. Roads into the state forest are narrow and winding in spots, so drivers of longer motorhomes should stick to marked campground access routes. Expect standard hookups (electric and water, with sewer at many private parks) at riverfront campgrounds. The newer Ohio River Campground at Shawnee offers full-service hookup sites, while the Turkey Creek Campground includes both electric and non-electric sites with a shared dump station. Cell service is generally available at developed campgrounds but can be limited in more remote areas of the state forest. Bring bug spray for summer, layers for shoulder seasons, and plan to pick up groceries before entering the forest.
