Campgrounds and RV parks near West Liberty, KY

The Daniel Boone National Forest dominates outdoor recreation here, with trailheads, forest roads, and paddling access spread across the ridges west and south of town. Cave Run Lake is known for muskie fishing, swimming beaches, and boat ramps, while Paintsville Lake to the east is stocked with trout and hosts bass tournaments throughout much of the year. Families can pair camping with visits to the Country Music Highway Museum and the Mountain HomePlace living-history farm near Paintsville, or the Loretta Lynn Homeplace in Butcher Hollow near Van Lear. Closer to West Liberty itself, the Licking River corridor is popular for kayaking and smallmouth fishing, and Grayson Lake State Park to the north adds cliff-lined paddling water and the Hidden Cove Golf Course.

Peak camping season across eastern Kentucky runs from April 1 through October 31, matching the operating window used by Kentucky State Parks. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book heaviest, and the Paintsville Lake campground is known to fill months in advance for prime summer dates. Fridays and Saturdays in peak season carry a two-night minimum at the state park. Spring brings green-up and reliable bass fishing but also one of the wettest stretches of the year, so plan for muddy sites and check river gauges before paddling. Fall is the most comfortable window, with cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color usually peaking in mid-to-late October across the Appalachian foothills. Winter camping is possible but limited: Kentucky State Parks warns that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so RV travelers should confirm hookups directly with the park before booking a cold-weather trip.

Expect small, quiet campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Paintsville Lake State Park offers full-hookup gravel pads with water, electric, and sewer, plus bathhouses, laundry, and lake access; the loop holds 32 developed sites and a separate area of 10 primitive walk-in tent sites. Cell service in the hills is uneven, so check with the campground if reliable coverage matters. Private parks near West Liberty tend to be compact, with a mix of back-in and pull-through sites suited to travel-day stops as much as week-long stays. Roads into the area are winding and narrow in places, so drivers of larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels should map the final approach carefully and avoid shortcut routes over the ridges.
