Campgrounds and RV parks near Westwood, KY

Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is the main outdoor draw, with a 225-acre lake known for bass fishing, hiking trails, and a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide. The resort's fieldstone lodge is named for Jesse Hilton Stuart, author, educator, Poet Laureate of Kentucky, and native son of Greenup County. The lake also holds bluegill, crappie, and catfish, and rental boats are available in season. Along the Ohio River, Holiday Point Marina and Campground and Little Bear Island Campground put boat ramps, fishing, and paddling within easy reach. Downtown Ashland offers riverfront parks, the Highlands Museum, and Central Park, while Huntington, West Virginia adds museums and waterfront trails just across the river. At Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, on-site amenities include a swimming pool, miniature golf, a stocked fishing pond, and seasonal theme weekends geared to families.

Ashland sits in the humid subtropical zone, classified by the Köppen system as Cfa, which typically features a hot summer with abundant rainfall and a cooler winter. Late spring through early fall is the core camping window. Accumulated rainfall peaks at about 2.05 inches in May, and the number of rainfall days ranges up to 17 days in May, so early-season trips should plan for rain gear and muddy sites. June through August is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and daytime highs often in the mid-80s. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is open year round, but Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so utilities may be limited in cold-weather months. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday operates year-round, which makes it a viable off-season option when state-park utilities are limited. Fall brings cooler nights, drier weather on average, and foliage color across the Appalachian foothills, making September and October popular for shoulder-season stays.

Terrain around Westwood is rolling Appalachian foothills cut by the Ohio River and its tributaries. Some campground access roads are narrow with grades, and at Greenbo Lake some sites have steep grades that aren't suitable for big rigs, so site selection matters when booking a larger RV. Expect humid summer conditions, mosquitoes near the lakes, and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-64 and Ashland but can drop off inside state-park hollows. Greenbo Lake has free WIFI available through TengoInternet. Kentucky campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 occupants, and golf carts are allowed in the campground by purchasing a permit at check-in. Pets are welcome at the listed campgrounds when leashed.
